In Memoriam: Fallen Stars of 2024

Al Roker and his family are mourning a devastating loss.

Alice Bell, the Today show anchor’s first wife with whom he shared daughter Courtney Roker Laga, has died, Courtney confirmed on social media. Alice was 77.

“She was my mother, my heart,” Courtney—who is mom to daughter Sky, 19 months, with husband Wesley Laga—wrote on Instagram Feb. 10. “And the most loving grandmother to Sky. I was with her for her last breath, and I will carry her love with me always.”

Her post was accompanied by a series of images of her mother, including two framed images of a young Courtney with Alice, followed by two of Alice holding Sky. In the latter two images, Alice appeared to be hooked up to oxygen.

Among those sharing well wishes in Courtney’s comment section was former Today cohost Tamron Hall, who wrote, “Sending our love.”

Alice’s family have not shared any details about her cause of death and Al was absent from the Feb. 11 Today broadcast.

Al and Alice were married between 1984 and 1994, adopting Courtney in 1987. Al also shares two children, Leila, 26, and Nicholas, 22, with wife Deborah Roberts.

Over the years, Alice had largely stayed out of the public eye, though in 2022 Courtney penned a sweet message to her many mother figures.

“Happy Mother’s Day to the three most important women in my life,” Courtney, 37, wrote in her post. “My mom Alice, my stepmother Deborah and my mother in law Barbara.”

For his part, Al has been candid about his love for his children over the years—and his commitment to always putting them first.

"It doesn't matter what you do, whatever your job is, your job is just making sure that each of these children, whoever they are, can be whoever they want to be," the newscaster shared on Today in 2021. "I will tell you both that it's the greatest thing that will ever happen to you, and that you will know that your heart beats outside your body to somebody else's.”

He added, “And no matter what happens, these are always your children.”

And when it came to becoming a grandfather for the first time with the arrival of baby Sky, Al was over the moon. As he promised on-air in March 2023, “For this grandchild, I'm going to be the best grandpa ever. I'm going to do whatever I can to spoil this kid."

The now-70-year-old even shared his plans for what Sky will one day call him. “I'm going to go with 'Pop-Pop,’” he revealed. “Because that's my dad's name for all his grandkids."
