Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is flashing back to the 1980s with Miami Vice '85, a new big-screen take on the classic 1980s TV series. Along for the ride is Alden Ehrenreich, who's undergoing a serious style transformation to fit into the seamy underworld of 1980s Miami. He discussed it with Collider's Maggie Lovitt while promoting his new psychological thriller, A Talent for Murder.

Miami Vice '85 stars Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan as Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, a mismatched pair of vice detectives who are looking to stem the tide of cocaine into Miami's sun-soaked streets. They'll be facing off against a deadly cartel leader (John Leguizamo) and his sinister right-hand man (Walton Goggins). The movie will also feature a colorful cast of characters, including Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones and the Six), Danny Ramirez (Captain America: Brave New World), Andrew Schulz (Street Fighter), Edi Gathegi (Superman), André Holland (The Knick), Michael Irby (Barry), Dominic Sessa (Tony), and Haley Lu Richardson (Ponies). The details of Ehrenreich's character are still under wraps, but we've got an idea of what he might look like.

The movie is already racing towards its release date, and Ehrenreich is starting to get his 1980s look together. He's sporting a sizable Tom Selleck-style mustache for the film. It's not his first time experimenting with facial hair for a role: as police officer Paul Morgan in last summer's Weapons, he grew a soup-strainer right out of Super Troopers. He also revealed that he's in the midst of choosing his wardrobe for the movie, which he's very enthusiastic about sporting on-screen. When asked about preparing for the role and working with the costume department, Ehrenreich said:

"They're great, it's very '80s, the costume designer is fantastic. I'm getting to try on all of the '80s... it all started looking like that. I'm prepping."

What Is 'A Talent For Murder' About?

In A Talent for Murder, Helen Mirren stars as writer Patricia Highsmith, the writer behind the Tom Ripley crime novels; now in the twilight of her life, she lives in near-total isolation in Switzerland. She's visited by Edward Ridgway (Ehrenreich), a young man who's been sent by her publishers to request one final Ripley novel. The movie is directed by Anton Corbijn (A Most Wanted Man), from a script by Joanna Murray-Smith, who adapts her own 2014 stage play, Switzerland. It will be released in theaters on October 23.

Miami Vice '85 will debut in theaters on May 19, 2028. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, as well as Lovitt's full conversation with Erenreich and Mirren.
