With more than 45 years at NBC and 30 years on Today, Al Roker still loves his job and has no intentions to retire.
The 8x Daytime Emmy winner recently said that retirement isn’t on his mind as he celebrates his milestone anniversary as weather anchor on the morning talk show, after taking over the weekday weather slot back in January 2026.
“Let’s put it this way: I haven’t thought about retirement,” he told People. “Somebody at NBC, that might be a different story.”
Roker continued, “I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it. At some point I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.”
In 2023, Roker marked 45 years at NBC, starting at a Cleveland affiliate in 1978 before he was promoted to the flagship NYC station in ’83.
“I think that’s the beauty of the broadcast is that the mission over these 74 years has not changed,” Roker told People. “The fact of the matter is we are each temporary custodians of this legacy. At some point I won’t be part of the show, somebody else will be, but to be part of a pretty cool club is very special. To say that this was a dream job isn’t really accurate because it never dawned on me that I could be on the Today show.”
Last year, Roker received a Lifetime Achievement honor at the 46th News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
