I spent the last five years hating my couch. Nothing was right about it: not the style, the color, the size, the firmness. I tried covering it with a blanket and bought more pillows than I knew what to do with in an effort to make it mesh with my space. It was a hopeless scenario. I simply lived with it until — after spending half a decade in the same apartment — I decided to move and I could justify getting a new one.

As soon as I had our new lease, I sold the old couch on Facebook Marketplace. I did this a little prematurely, which forced my husband and me to sit in armchairs like the old couple in "Up" for a few months. Our new space was much larger than the last, and I wasn't going to make the same mistake again of hastily picking something out that I'd end up hating in a month. I spent most of my nights browsing the internet for the perfect option and even created a Google Spreadsheet before deciding on the Casterly Owen Sofa ($1,599). It was everything I was looking for: deep (my husband is 6'2" and he hated that he couldn't sit comfortably on our last couch); soft but not shapeless; simple and minimal in style, so it would mesh with all interiors as my preferences evolve; and washable for easy cleaning. I fell in love with it online, but the ultimate test was how it worked in my space. Keep reading for my full review.

What I Like About the Casterly Owen Sofa

The Owen Sofa is a minimalist style couch and comes in 14 fabric options to fit a variety of interior design styles. I went for the Pearl Beige fabric, which is twill and machine-washable — something I felt was important because I plan to have this piece of furniture for a long, long time. You can also pick which style legs you want for further customization. Of the options, walnut and natural, I went with walnut to match our other wood furniture.

Delivery couldn't have been smoother. After my order was placed, the shipping company contacted me to schedule the drop-off day. I was provided with a window of time on that day, and then I received phone updates with their exact ETA on the day itself.

As mentioned, I despised my last couch, so I was very picky about my new one. I had a long list of requirements, and chief among them was comfort. Watching movies is my husband's and my favorite activity to do together, so we spend a lot of time sitting on the couch at night. (Our last couch was so hard, my butt would go numb after sitting on it for an hour.) On the other hand, I don't like sofas that are so mushy that they suck you in and you can't sit upright. The seating depth was also important. I like to be able to switch positions and sit with my feet underneath me, as does my husband, who, as I mentioned, is very tall — so we needed something that had the space for that.

What's Worth Noting About the Castlery Owen Sofa

The sofa arrives in a few boxes and requires a bit of assembly. My building has a freight elevator (luckily), so the delivery drivers were able to bring it to my apartment with ease. Once unboxed, it took no more than 20 minutes and a power drill to put the pieces together. They placed the couch exactly where I wanted it, cleaned up the trash from the boxes, and went on their way.

Who Is the Castlery Owen Sofa Best For?

The Castlery Owen Sofa is rated as a fairly soft sofa, so it's best for someone with similar preferences. The first day I got it, I could tell I was going to be pleased, and now, after owning it for a month, I can attest that it's only gotten more comfortable. It's cushiony and super comfy, but it still has shape and structure. The couch has the usual side and back cushions, but it also has the addition of two large pillow cushions that add to the cloud-like feeling. When you sit down, you're able to sink into it and really get comfortable — whether you want to lie down for a nap or sit up and have a conversation.

Is the Castlery Owen Sofa Worth the Splurge?

The Castlery Owen Sofa is an investment, but it's worth the splurge if you're someone who is looking for a high-quality, machine-washable couch that is comfortable and looks great with any decor style.
