Batman’s Batsuit wardrobe is immense, spanning almost nine decades and a series of dynamic tones, such as campy, fantastical, hyperrealistic, and stylistic. Across all DC media, from the Batman: Arkham franchise’s pointy, long cowl ears to the Silver Age’s purple, red, and yellow Zurr-En-Arrh costume, the beauty of having so many Batsuit designs is that fans’ favorites can be wholly varied based on their individual tastes.
For instance, some fans may adore Terry McGinnis’ sleek, slender, and futuristic Batman Beyond Batsuit because of its cowl inexplicably revealing Terry’s mouth, while others may prefer bulkier, armored Batsuits, like the one Bruce Wayne wears to fight Superman in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. However, the best pound-for-pound Batsuit, with most modern fans’ and readers’ agreement on the matter, is one that debuted only recently in the mainline Batman comic book series.
Jiménez’s Blue Batsuit Is S-Tier
Batman’s latest relaunch came with a redesign of the Caped Crusader’s Batsuit in Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’s ongoing run. Jiménez stuck around to be the main artist for Fraction’s run, resuming his pivotal creative team role from the Zdarsky run that precedes Fraction’s.
Funny enough, the Batsuit design (from an aesthetic perspective, at least) remained largely the same, too, with the grey bodysuit featuring an incredibly simple-looking fabric, gloves, boots, trunks, and utility belt. Its biggest and most strikingly obvious change was swapping black for blue, and a signature new bat symbol that is decidedly more angular.
Batman’s Dark Knight is now considerably less so, wholly embracing a bold, bright blue and defining Batman’s newest era. Blue Batsuits have been popular before, but if James Gunn’s DCU Batman chooses to wear a blue Batsuit, it will be difficult not to attribute a tiny bit of that inspiration to how beloved and iconic Jiménez’s new Batsuit design is.
A New Batsuit For A New Era
Blue Batsuits are a rarity nowadays, due to how gritty and noir-esque many Batman iterations have been lately. It would’ve been immersion-breaking and tonally clashing for Bruce’s Batsuit to be light blue in Batman: The Imposter or The Batman (2022), for example, where the material is stylized yet ‘realistic’ and darkly atmospheric.
That said, the color blue also signifies Batman’s high-tech gadgetry, expressing a theme throughout each issue with notable accents, highlights, and complementary lighting. In Batman #7, in particular, it is stunning how clean and simple the color work is between a blue Batman and a green Joker.
The utility belt is a nice touch, as well, with unique pouches that actually look like they house certain types of gadgets, rather than typical utility belt designs that feature the same homogenous square pouches.
Armored Batsuits may be the more popular design for live-action or video game endeavors, and yet this blue Batsuit is arguably the revised benchmark for how a default Batsuit should look in a comic book. Besides, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Batsuit is perhaps as close as a live-action Batman has gotten to a comic-accurate Batsuit.
Likewise, a bodysuit that slips on like a shirt and a pair of pants could feasibly be excused as being lined with thin body armor. The blue Batsuit doesn’t look like it could take much damage, but Batman was able to tank a shotgun blast to the back of the head in Batman #2 and survive—mildly concussed and nauseous, but completely fine by the beginning of issue #3.
It’s a testament to how phenomenal Jiménez’s blue Batsuit is that it was already adapted as a Batsuit skin for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and it won’t be surprising at all if future Batman games do the same. This Batsuit is well-rounded visually and functionally, fashioned with discreet, advanced technology while looking as minimalistic as possible.
Batman #10 is scheduled to be released on June 3, 2026.
