Now, one of Driver and Mann’s most overlooked collaborations is getting a second life on streaming. Ferrari is officially arriving on Netflix US on May 24. The biographical racing drama starred Driver as legendary entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari during one of the most turbulent periods of his life.
Despite carrying a reported $95 million budget and strong reviews, the film grossed only around $44 million worldwide, making it a notable box office disappointment. Ferrari's ensemble cast included Penélope Cruz as Laura Ferrari, Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Patrick Dempsey, and Sarah Gadon.
Released in 2023, the biographical sports drama portrayed Enzo Ferrari during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Set in the summer of 1957, the movie explored Ferrari’s personal and financial struggles as the company bearing his name teetered on the brink of collapse. Additionally, he dealt with the collapse of his marriage and grief over the death of his son, while secretly maintaining another family outside his marriage. Lastly, it focused on his racing team's bid to win the Mille Miglia, hoping victory would save the future of his struggling company.
Directed by Mann, Ferrari marked the filmmaker’s long-awaited return to the big screen after an eight-year gap following Blackhat. Although Ferrari earned praise for its performances, particularly Cruz’s fiery supporting turn, it struggled to connect with mainstream audiences. Despite its sizable $95 million budget, the movie grossed roughly $44 million worldwide, making it a box-office disappointment despite positive critical reviews.
Still, the movie garnered appreciation among moviegoers of character-driven dramas and motorsports films. ScreenRant’s review praised Ferrari for balancing emotional intensity with technical precision, highlighting Mann’s ability to create tension both on and off the racetrack. The film also drew attention for how closely it aligned with the real-life events surrounding Enzo Ferrari’s life, even while taking some creative liberties in dramatizing key moments.
Ferrari earned a 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 74% audience score. When the film was previously available on Hulu, it was able to find streaming success, showing that availability on different platforms allowed more people to revisit the movie or check it out for the first time.
Streaming has increasingly become a lifeline for prestige dramas that struggled commercially, often helping them find entirely new audiences months or even years after release. Its arrival on Netflix could ultimately give Ferrari the second chance it never quite got in theaters, reaching new audiences that might appreciate the ensemble piece more than 2023 theater audiences.
Ferrari comes to Netflix US on May 24.
