ABC Resets The Best Comedy On TV Ahead Of 100th-Episode Milestone

Big changes are coming to one iconic ABC comedy that is about to pass the significant 100th-episode milestone. ABC ending the 2026-2027 TV cycle by renewing all its scripted TV shows guarantees the inclusion of promising hits in their second season and well-established juggernauts in its 2026 Fall lineup. Among the latter, Abbott Elementary is returning for a record-breaking season 6, which is especially impressive in the context of network TV sitcoms, as they rarely come close to the heights the genre reached in the aughts nowadays.

Abbott Elementary season 5 included several unexpected developments that went beyond the simple funding issues that we have come to expect from the mockumentary. Indeed, between the furnace shutting down and temporarily closing the school, forcing Abbott Elementary to relocate into a mall, and Janine and Gregory breaking up out of the blue, it could be argued that Abbott Elementary season 5 put the teachers of the titular public school through the wringer. Still, the teachers’ can-do attitude and generally upbeat approach let them overcome those unexpected challenges with poise.

The crises are unlikely to decrease after the emotional rollercoaster that was the finale of Abbott Elementary season 5. While the titular public school was eventually spared from closing, the district is still set to close down 20 other schools, which will inevitably impact the day-to-day of Janine and her colleagues. This means that Abbott Elementary season 6 will test its teachers in a completely different manner when it returns on October 7, 2026.

Abbott Elementary's Character Dynamics Are Changing In Season 6

Abbott Elementary season 6 promises to change the dynamics among several key characters. According to executive producers Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern (via TV Line), the sitcom’s upcoming season will see Gregory and Ava’s different work styles and philosophies clash. With the district closing several schools, Abbott Elementary will not only have to deal with the regular kind of chaos that always ruled its halls and the added pressure of the kids from other schools moving there, but also the challenges stemming from Gregory having become Ava’s assistant principal.

Gregory will reportedly continue to teach his class while also taking his new job “very, very seriously,” leaving him stretched thin and potentially causing tension with Ava, whose interest in her job as principal has at times been perceived as lacking. The Abbott Elementary EPs didn’t outright reveal whether Gregory’s marriage proposal to Janine will happen in season 6, but they confirmed that season 5 storylines will carry through, making it more likely for Abbott Elementary season 6 to show Gregory and Janine’s relationship reach the next level.

Personal dynamic changes won’t concern solely Gregory, as his reveal to O’Shon that he might take him up on his Jewelry Row discount offer suggested. Halpern hinted at Jacob’s new liaison representative position having a bigger role in Abbott Elementary season 6, working as a “stepping stone to where we want to take him,” thus impacting Jacob both personally and professionally, as there can be some character development in connection to his new role being taken extremely seriously. These revelations all point to Abbott Elementary season 6 resetting the story to set up new challenges for its teachers.

Why Abbott Elementary's 100th Episode Milestone Is Special

Abbott Elementary season 5’s finale being the overall 93rd episode of the mockumentary comedy ensures that Abbott Elementary’s 100th episode will coincide with season 6’s seventh episode. That is proof of longevity that can go well beyond the impressive number, as reaching 100 episodes historically unlocked new opportunities for network TV shows.

While not a mandatory rule, the 100th episode has always been considered the threshold to pass to enter syndicated reruns for a network TV show, as such a number made it possible for a network to run 20 weeks of weekday reruns without it having to repeat one episode in that timeframe. Syndication is usually where profits are maximized for a network TV show, making the milestone incredibly meaningful for Abbott Elementary, as it could open the door for the sitcom to become a financial success in addition to being critically acclaimed and beloved by audiences.

Even without taking into consideration syndication, reaching such a number is a milestone in and of itself. It has always been rare for a TV show to run for so long that it managed to reach 100 episodes, but it has become incredibly more difficult with fewer and fewer sitcoms retracing the successful steps of the likes of Seinfeld, Friends, or the more recent The Big Bang Theory. Doing so has the chance to inscribe Abbott Elementary in the history books of network television, making the upcoming season all the more exciting as a result.
