In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Davis was asked about which aspects and questions surrounding Mr. Johnson that he'd like to see in future episodes. The actor responded by saying that he'd like for the Emmy-winning sitcom to introduce Mr. Johnson's mother. In the quote below, Davis shares his vision for how Johnson and his mother might interact:
I've made suggestions to them. I won't tell you the actresses that I've suggested, but I think we should see Mr. Johnson's mother. She's the only person that he bows down and kowtows to. He becomes like a little boy around her, and I've made some suggestions on who that should be. But they look at me like, "Yeah, okay." [laughs]
What Introducing Mr. Johnson's Family Would Mean For Abbott Elementary
Abbott Elementary season 6 is already confirmed, and the fifth installment has arguably offered the biggest insight into Davis' character so far. He has a romance with a fellow janitor, Miss Carroll, played by Khandi Alexander. It turns out, after a very specific flirtation, Johnson is nervous about getting into a romantic relationship, but with help from his friends at school, he makes it work.
But for a character that has provided Abbott Elementary with some of its best quotes, Johnson hasn't revealed much about himself outside contradictory reflections about his past. The contradictions are never explained or even addressed, but it's undeniable that bringing Mr. Johnson's mom into the story for an episode or two would go a long way in explaining how he came to be such a fitfully fascinating individual.
It would also continue a tradition for the ABC series, which has introduced family members for every other main character. Mr. Johnson's family would perhaps be a little weirder, but it would help to clarify some lingering question marks that the show still has this deep into its run. On the other hand, Abbott may actually want to maintain the sense of unknown that surrounds Johnson since it has worked out so far.
Introducing Mr. Johnson's Mother Is A Big Opportunity For Casting
One thing that may overpower the need to keep Mr. Johnson as a mystery is the fact that Abbott Elementary has a history of fun cameos and guests, including Ayo Edebiri, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Hart, Keith David, and more. Bringing in such a high-profile character represents an opportunity to bring in a potential acting veteran who may just match Johnson's singular energy.
Abbott Elementary season 5 airs Wednesdays at 8:30 PM ET on ABC.
