Nothing succeeds like success, especially when it comes against all odds. Never before had a documentary film playing in fewer than 1,000 theaters topped the domestic box-office chart until this week, when A24's You Can See Everything overtook the video game adaptation Street Fighter following a blockbuster opening-weekend haul. Co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, You Can See Everything shattered expectations with a $15 million debut in just 855 theaters this past weekend and reported 2,000 sold-out shows. This was the second-biggest opening for a documentary, behind Michael Moore's provocative Oscar-winning film Fahrenheit 9/11.
A24 gave the movie a textbook platform release after cementing its event status in the preceding month. The existence of the three-hour epic, which follows disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the weeks leading up to her incarceration for fraud, was revealed at this year's Telluride Film Festival. In the following weeks, A24 created an air of exclusivity around the movie, further turbo-charging demand. Now that the film has delivered on its promise, both critically and commercially, A24 will allow it to explode nationwide this coming week. In fact, You Can See Everything is expected to give DC Studios' Clayface a run for its money and stake a claim on the number-one spot on the weekend's box-office charts.
'You Can See Everything' Is Gearing Up to Challenge 'Clayface' at the Box Office
The film is now sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 97% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, "Nathan Fielder's ironclad commitment to the bit is pushed to its limit in You Can See Everything, an inscrutable Rorschach Test of Elizabeth Holmes' psyche that's as absorbing as it is haunting." In his review, Collider's Samuel R. Murrian described it as "a true original that will absolutely continue to surge in the awards season conversation." The movie will expand into more than 2,600 theaters this week, as it eyes around $25 million to $30 million over the weekend. This is a large enough projection to raise concerns for Clayface, which is expecting a $30 million domestic debut on the back of divisive early reviews. A24 has already experienced breakout hits this year, with Backrooms grossing $400 million worldwide, and The Drama and Primetime emerging as two of its biggest domestic hits.
