A Good Shout god rolls and how to get them in Destiny 2

8 hours ago 5

Heavy crossbows were somewhat rare in Destiny 2, locked either behind a raid or limited-time events—until A Good Shout came along. Getting a god roll of this weapon isn’t difficult if you’re willing to do certain Portal activities, but its perks aren’t all that great.

It’s somewhat rare to see Void options that don’t have any elemental perks in their god roll. As a heavy weapon, however, it’s best to focus on damage perks for your A Good Shout, even if what’s on the menu isn’t top tier.

That said, there is an argument for having a copy of A Good Shout in your hands. This crossbow does plenty of damage and can occupy your heavy slot, potentially bringing you anti-Champion mods. It also has a great ammo economy, since you can pick up its bolts off the floor or from enemies. Here are our god rolls for A Good Shout in Destiny 2.

  • Rail: Frictionless Rail or Quickload Rail
  • Bolt: Charged Bolts, Serrated Bolts, or Spring-Auger Bolts
  • First perk: Envious Arsenal or Withering Gaze
  • Second perk: Boxed Breathing, High Ground, or Butterfly

A Good Shout brings two main options in the first column. Envious Arsenal is a classic for heavies, letting you skip reloads by firing your other two weapons. This excels at boss damage, for instance, since you can pair it with a sniper or other hard-hitting weapon for bigger damage. We recommend the Conspiracy Honed sniper rifle from the Equilibrium dungeon, though Mint Retrograde and/or Psi Aeterna are excellent options.

Withering Gaze, on the other hand, is a free Weaken on your target as long as you hold the aim a bit. Someone in your fireteam likely has a tether if you’re doing a raid or higher-difficulty content, but having access to that debuff can be excellent. Bolt Scavenger also works if you’re in a scenario to spam it, while Built to Blast and No Distractions don’t really matter that much.

The fourth column is usually where the real damage dealers are, but in the case of A Good Shout, there’s not a lot of gold here. It’s not every day I can say High Ground is part of the god roll for any weapon in Destiny 2 without it being sarcasm, but that’s the predicament this weapon is in.

Boxed Breathing is an easy-to-activate perk, and it shares a trigger with Withering Gaze. If you’re using A Good Shout to weaken targets anyway, you might as well get a bit of damage with it. High Ground is circumstantial at best, since you get max stacks whenever you’re slightly above your target’s elevation.

Butterfly helps take down groups of enemies (again, just by holding down ADS), which adds some crowd control capacity to this heavy crossbow. Rampage requires kills to stack, so getting uptime with it is tricky. Destabilizing Rounds is a simpler Butterfly with a little Void flavor, and there could be an argument for Repulsor Brace/Destabilizing in a more general-use roll. Since this is a heavy weapon, though, we’re focusing on chunking down bosses or Champions, and in those cases, it’s not the best option.

A Good Shout drops as Pinnacle Ops gear from the Portal, meaning you can get it through any source that drops this type of gear. The most obvious one, naturally, is by doing the old Exotic missions in the Pinnacle Ops playlist, though it may sometimes appear as the featured weapon in Grandmaster Vanguard Alerts. Suraya Hawthorne’s clan engrams might also drop it.
