It could be a classic scene from any British romcom. Down on one knee in the street, MobLand star Anson Boon proposes to actress Ellie Bamber, by presenting her with a ring hidden in a box of chocolates.
But the scenes being filmed in London last week were not for a run-of-the-mill love story. Instead, the film is about one of football’s most bizarre cult legends.
Boon, 26, and Ms Bamber, 29, were spotted filming the proposal scene on the set of Halftime Hero, which tells the story of devoted West Ham fan Steve Davies – who ended up on the pitch and scored a goal for his club during a match against Oxford City in the 1990s.
Ms Bamber, who starred in The Trial of Christine Keeler, plays Davies’s girlfriend Penny in the heart-warming story, which producers have described as ‘Billy Elliot meets The Full Monty’.
Pictures from the set show a leather jacket-wearing Boon getting down on one knee as his co-star, wearing a red and gold patterned top, lace-trimmed skirt and black boots, looks shocked.
She then plucks the engagement ring from a box of MaltMelts – thought to be a fictional version of Maltesers. Ms Bamber then beams with joy as she flings her arms around her leading man afterwards.

The film, which also features Eddie Marsan as West Ham’s then-assistant manager Harry Redknapp, looks set to be a huge hit when it is released next year as it is being produced by Sir Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free.
The true story of West Ham’s superfan-turned-hero is one which went down in the club’s – and in footballing – history.
At a pre-season friendly against Oxford City in 1994, Davies – then 27 and working as a courier – spent the first half of the match beside West Ham’s dugout directing a stream of abuse towards striker Lee Chapman. His tirade caught the attention of Redknapp, who suggested to Davies that he take Chapman’s place on the pitch at half-time.
Davies did – and put the ball in the net during West Ham’s 4-0 victory.
He once described it as ‘the greatest moment in my life’.
‘After that, I was exhausted,’ he said in a 2013 interview. ‘I was on 30 cigarettes a day back then. I had a couple of cigs and a couple of beers in the first half, didn’t I?’
