The Legend of Vox Machina features many characters voiced by Critical Role alums, but one such actor actually exists within the fictional world. The cast of The Legend of Vox Machina has nine main voice actors who form the titular team: Liam O'Brien as Vax'ildan, Laura Bailey as Vex'ahlia, Travis Willingham as Grog, Ashley Johnson as Pike, Sam Riegel as Scanlan, Marisha Ray as Keyleth, Taliesin Jaffe as Percy, and, as of season 4, Wayne Brady as Taryon Darrington.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 sees all of these voice actors return, adapting a story that was first told during the tabletop Critical Role series. Each of the voice actors plays the same character in The Legend of Vox Machina that they initially established in the tabletop series, the latter of which was led by the Dungeon Master, Matthew Mercer. Although Mercer has voiced several characters in The Legend of Vox Machina, season 4 takes this one step further.
Season 5 will end The Legend of Vox Machina, with season 4 taking the show towards that by setting a new status quo. This involved Vex and Percy living a life of nobility in Whitestone, attending balls filled with aristocrats and the rest of that ilk. One of these people asks Percy when he will make an honest woman out of Vex, with the latter replying, "When you do the same for one of your mistresses, Lord Mercer."
Not only is the name of this character an Easter egg to Matthew Mercer's presence in Critical Role, but the character is also designed to resemble the actor. Going one step further, Mercer himself voices his animated counterpart. For all intents and purposes, Matthew Mercer officially exists within the world of The Legend of Vox Machina, which is more than can be said for his Critical Role friends, who simply voice their original characters.
Matthew Mercer Has Voiced Many NPCs In The Legend Of Vox Machina
Just as he did in Critical Role, Matthew Mercer voices many "NPCs" in The Legend of Vox Machina. As the Dungeon Master, Mercer was responsible for filling Critical Role's first campaign with its array of side characters, giving them voices, personalities, and powers in the process. As is the case in all Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, these were known as NPCs, or non-playable characters. While TV is different, side characters can be known as NPCs in the world of Vox Machina.
For instance, throughout The Legend of Vox Machina, Mercer has provided the "voice" of Trinket, Vex'ahlia's pet bear. In a more meaty role, Mercer portrayed Silas Briarwood, a primary antagonist of season 1. In fact, Mercer has appeared in several villainous roles, including Percy's demon, Orthax, the dragon Umbrasyl, and Grog's evil sword, Craven Edge. That said, Mercer has appeared as some allies of Vox Machina, such as Dr. Dranzel and Doty.
Where You Know Matthew Mercer From Outside Of Critical Role
As with the rest of The Legend of Vox Machina's cast, Matthew Mercer is a prolific voice actor. His most notable roles have come in the anime genre, where he has provided many English dubs. The best known among them is perhaps Captain Levi Ackerman in Attack on Titan. Other significant roles include Kiritsugu Emiya in Fate/Zero, Leorio in Hunter x Hunter, and Jotaro Kujo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, to name only a very small handful.
Mercer has also voiced an array of characters in the video game world, notably Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 6. Since 2016, Mercer has played Jesse McCree in the Overwatch franchise. Some other video game roles include Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Battlefront II and Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and its spin-off, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Evidently, Mercer's voice acting has transcended many different stories, earning him a spot in Critical Role, as well as many characters and even his own likeness in The Legend of Vox Machina.
