A 2006 PlayStation 2 Classic Is Officially Coming To PlayStation Plus This Month

The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all-time, and it has arguably secured its position as the greatest ever as well, given how much of an impact it made during its time in the sun. The biggest contributor to that legacy was the stellar array of thousands of games that were released primarily on the platform, with genuine GOAT contenders of several genres coming out during that time.

Whether it was the gritty story of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that drew you in, or something more high-octane like Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, there was a little something on the platform for everyone. Now, one of the more under-appreciated games from that time is about to make a long-awaited return, and you might not have to pay anything extra to play it.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post confirming the news that Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams will join PS Plus Premium classics catalog on August 18th, 2026, as confirmed during the most recent State of Play. It's an interesting choice, given that Dawn of Dreams is probably a slightly weaker entry than those that released around it, but it's always nice to have a new addition to the catalog and it's a good game in its own right.

There were plenty of responses from fans who were keen to play the game once again, with one saying, "Too bad Capcom doesn't add trophy support for the games in this catalog, but cool to see another Onimusha available on modern hardware."

"Definitely down from O3 but the coop here made it for me growing up, finally being able to play Onimusha with my brother. That and the Street Fighter outfits," another added.

The first two games in the series have already been remastered relatively recently, so it does make sense that Dawn of Dreams was chosen here. At the same time, all hands are currently on deck producing Onimusha 5, with that set to release in less than a month, on September 3, 2026.

It's nice to see the Onimusha series return to such prominence once again, after its role as a bit of a cultural touchstone lessened in the 2010s. With PlayStation certainly needing a few wins from the games that are most closely associated with the company, this could be the perfect opportunity to instill some faith in the platform once again, particularly with the other major releases coming in the next few months.
