Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have created perhaps one of the most enduring actor-director partnerships of the decade; they've also broken a long tradition of mostly male pairs to be counted among the greatest ever. However, it will probably take several more clutter-breaking movies for them to find a spot alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese, who began working together more than two decades ago. They're set to reunite for the seventh time on an upcoming psychological thriller that will also star Jennifer Lawrence. In the recent Apple TV documentary about his career, Mr. Scorsese, the legendary filmmaker looked back on his first collaboration with DiCaprio. He said that the young star was hungry to prove himself as an actor, and had the power to get major projects green-lit thanks to the success of Titanic. Scorsese was going through a bit of a slump during that time, and DiCaprio's arrival came as a godsend.

The first movie they did together ran into trouble during production, with Scorsese clashing with producer Harvey Weinstein over the cut, and ultimately having to pay for additional photography out-of-pocket. He had a terrible time on set, and in one moment of weakness, even hurled a chair out of the window of his office. After a years-long post-production process, Scorsese and Weinstein agreed on a 168-minute cut. By then, the movie's budget had ballooned to $100 million, and it needed to work commercially for everyone's sake. It earned mostly positive reviews, and ultimately grossed $193 million worldwide. Set in the mid-1800s, the movie dealt with many of the same themes and ideas as Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off 1883.

The Martin Scorsese Epic That Fans of '1883' Will Enjoy

The movie in question is Gangs of New York, a period epic about the violence upon which America was built — Scorsese and DiCaprio would revisit similar themes in the even longer epic Killers of the Flower Moon. Gangs of New York holds a 72% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Though flawed, the sprawling, messy Gangs of New York is redeemed by impressive production design and Day-Lewis' electrifying performance." The movie featured a memorable performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, who was joined by a sprawling cast including Liam Neeson, Cameron Diaz, John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Graham, and others. You can watch the movie on Starz beginning March 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
