In 87 years of comics, Batman has faced countless defeats, yet he has never once completely surrendered, proving his near-superhuman perseverance. But now, nearly nine decades later, the Dark Knight has done something completely unprecedented: he has openly admitted defeat, revealing the one hero truly capable of besting him.
If you haven’t been keeping up with Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora’s DC K.O. tie-in, Knightfight, drop everything and dive into this four-part limited series because it is nothing short of a masterpiece when it comes to Bat-Family content. For those new to the series, it follows Bruce as he is transported to alternate realities via the Heart of Apokolips.
In each reality, one of his sons has taken up the Batman mantle, and the Heart of Apokolips demands that Bruce fight these grown-up versions of his sons to return to his own reality. Bruce faces off against Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake, but it is only in his fight against Damian that he finally meets defeat.
DC Reveals Damian Wayne is the Only Hero Capable of Truly Defeating Batman
Comic Page Comes From Joshua Williamson's DC K.O.: Knightfight #4 (2026) - Art by Dan Mora
DC K.O. Knightfight #4 sees Bruce face off against the grown-up version of Damian, who took up the Batman mantle after his father and even managed to retire it due to his success in cleaning up Gotham, fulfilling his father’s ultimate goal. However, Damian, understanding what is at stake, agrees to don his Batsuit once more and face his father in combat.
The fight between father and son is brutal, with Damian ultimately striking Bruce down with his sword. In the distress of having struck his own father, Damian yells at Bruce to get back up and keep fighting. Bruce responds, "I can't. I can't do it. I... I can't win." This verbal admission of defeat is what sets this moment apart from all of Bruce’s previous losses.
The instant Bruce admits defeat, the Heart of Apokolips pulls him out of the alternate reality, stating, "That was the final test, Batman. To see if you could ever admit defeat." This moment underscores how historic it is for Batman, who until now has never so openly recognized and verbalized a loss.
With this being the first time Batman has explicitly admitted defeat, it also elevates Damian, making him the only person to ever truly defeat the Dark Knight. Even his brothers (Dick, Tim, and Jason), who all had their chances to beat Bruce's Batman in this series, failed to do so.
DC K.O.: Knightfight #4 is now available from DC Comics!
