Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

In only two games thus far, Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi franchise has had no qualms about leaving as many loose threads dangling as possible. To be fair, Star Wars Jedi’s Cal Kestis and the wild journey he’s been on have not yet been explicitly folded into Star Wars’ established, theatrical lore, meaning that Respawn has had to tiptoe its way throughout the era nestled between Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

Nonetheless, there are many lapses within Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s stories that the upcoming third installment of the series will hopefully answer. Funny enough, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor didn’t care to answer many of the questions posed by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and it’s possible that Star Wars Jedi 3 will neglect to pick up where Star Wars Jedi: Survivor left off, as well.

8 How Cal Survived After The Jedi Purge

We know that Jedi Master Jaro Tapal helped his apprentice, Cal, flee from the Albedo Brave Republic Star Destroyer before the reprogrammed clone troopers could kill him, and we know that Cal eventually went into hiding as a member of the Scrapper Guild on Bracca’s junkyard. That said, how Cal survived for days, weeks, and months, let alone for five years, is a mystery—one that is unlikely to be dug into at all.

Cal was wearing brown-and-white Padawan attire and boasting a Padawan’s signature braid when Order 66 commenced, and he jettisoned away in an escape pod, and he would’ve needed to be a remarkably resourceful 13-year-old in order to not be immediately discovered by the Empire when he landed on Bracca. Cal survived somehow, and that’s all Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order wanted players to take away from this prologue.

7 What Happened To The Stinger Mantis’ Bogling?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order features a bogling players can recruit as a shy companion, though they must wait until the end of the game to do so. It truly is a companion, as it’s required to have it join Cal’s crew on the Stinger Mantis to unlock the achievement associated with getting all companions on your ship. Sadly, this bogling no longer inhabits the ship in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, with no word on why.

We do, however, see boglings running around on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Koboh, with it being implied that they are the spawn of the one Cal found and took in as a stowaway. In reality, the reason why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor didn’t care to reprise players’ skittish bogling pet as a companion is probably because acquiring it in the first place was fully optional.

6 Cal Dabbling In The Dark Side

Cal Kestis using the dark side of the Force on Bode Akuna in Jedi_ Survivor

Cal is one of the rare Star Wars Jedi characters who seems resistant to the temptations of the dark side of the Force, while also not being afraid to lean into the dark side when the power he can harness would benefit him. This doesn’t mean he’s used the Force for evil, yet he’s definitely embraced the rage that comes with powers imbued with the dark side, such as when the screen gains a hazy, red filter when Cal fights Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s final boss, fellow Order 66 survivor Bode Akuna.

It could add a fun layer to gameplay if Cal fell to the dark side wholly and bleed his lightsaber, but it would likely take quite an alarming and dramatic turn of events to make that happen. Either way, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is certainly leaving a foot in the doorway, in case it wants to explore that more in the future, suggesting that we have not yet seen the last of Cal’s dark-side temptations.

5 The Fate Of Kata Akuna

To say that Kata Akuna will be a key figure in Star Wars Jedi 3 simply because she’s with the gang at the end of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is not necessarily a guarantee. For instance, the ending of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proposed that the sequel would feature the Stinger Mantis crew—Cal, Merrin, Cere Junda, and Greez Dritus—embarking on adventures together, and it turned out that they’d be disbanded, after all, following a five-year time jump by the beginning of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

For now, it’s presumed that Cal and Merrin will raise Kata like their own daughter and train her in the ways of the Force (and possibly in the ways of dark magick, potentially making her incredibly dynamic as a new playable Star Wars Jedi character). Plus, Kata could inherit the dark-side tendencies exhibited by her father, Bode, and possibly take revenge against the Jedi who killed him, who may well be the same man who’s raising her in Bode’s stead.

4 Cal And Merrin, Sitting In A Tree

It was lovely to see Cal and Merrin’s romance briefly blossom in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, confirming that Cal is no traditional Jedi—not that the Jedi are properly a thing anymore, anyway. Indeed, if there’s one thing the Star Wars Jedi franchise does exceedingly well, it’s developing Cal with real depth.

With any luck, both Cal and Merrin will continue to develop beautifully as the franchise goes on. Taking in Kata as their daughter could let players see them as adoptive parents by the start of Star Wars Jedi 3, though their relationship would have progressed fairly quickly from a kiss to parenthood, if so. But, to be fair, most of the time they spent together was between games.

3 Is Tanalorr Too OP?

The Mantis in space heading to Tanalorr in Jedi Survivor

Why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Dagan Gera was so obsessed with Tanalorr is irrelevant now, but the planet ought to be profoundly important to Star Wars Jedi 3. It’s a haven that nobody else in a galaxy far, far away would know about, and is teased to become a refuge for the Hidden Path and anyone else who is trying to hide from the Empire.

For all we know, Cal, Merrin, Cere, Greez, and Kata could live happily ever after on Tanalorr and never need to be woven into the larger fabric of Star Wars lore. Of course, if Bode and Greez could successfully find ways to travel to Tanalorr, surely there are countless other skilled pilots who’d be able to, too, and it will be neat to see if anyone’s able to threaten the sanctity of the planet in a new Star Wars Jedi game.

2 Where Does The Stinger Mantis Crew Go From Here?

Once more, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor ends with the Stinger Mantis crew together—minus Cere, who was slain in her battle with Darth Vader on Jedha. Unfortunately, there’s no telling what shape the crew will be in when we see them again, such as whether they’ll be disbanded and spread out across the galaxy.

If Star Wars Jedi 3 is the last chapter of Cal’s story, then it’d make sense for it to be the Stinger Mantis crew’s last chapter, also. In that case, we’ll hopefully get hard-and-fast clarification on what becomes of them and what the rest of their individual lives might look like if it’s possible we’re never going to see them again. It’s devastating that we haven’t gotten to see the crew all together on a bunch of adventures, and it’d be a shame if they’re not together all throughout Star Wars Jedi 3, aboard the Stinger Mantis, to make up for that.

1 What Becomes Of Cal In Star Wars Lore?

Cameron Monaghan as Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi Survivor

Unless Cal is introduced in an animated or live-action Star Wars project beyond the games he stars in, it appears as if Cal’s story is an open and closed book as far as the Star Wars Jedi games are concerned. He could be growing old with Merrin on Tanalorr, and nobody would be the wiser, but the last of these games must give players an explanation as to why we haven’t seen him elsewhere in Star Wars lore.

This has always plagued Star Wars Jedi’s storytelling. Nothing Cal does can ever feasibly be that monumental or well-known because no canon Star Wars movie or TV show has acknowledged the character or his exploits. That could change one day, and it’d be extraordinary if it did, but the Star Wars Jedi franchise may not contribute much to the brand's overall lore otherwise.
