7 Marvel Heroes Stronger Than Thanos

But the Mad Titan is neither invincible nor unbeatable. Several heroes have gone toe-to-toe with Thanos and come out on top, some through sheer cunning, others with a well-timed stroke of luck. And then there are those who haven't crossed paths with him yet but, on paper, would have every right to win.

Of course, names like Kang the Conqueror and Galactus come to mind almost instantly as cosmic-tier threats who could easily overpower Thanos. But a few others might surprise anyone not glued to a comic book page.

7 Adam Warlock

Created by a scientific faction known as the Enclave and later reborn under the High Evolutionary, Adam Warlock was designated by cosmic forces as the Avatar of Life, existing specifically to balance Thanos, the Avatar of Death. Warlock wields cosmic energy manipulation, matter transmutation, and near-immortality through cellular regeneration, by virtue of his bonding to the mystical Soul Gem.

Though physically weaker than heavyweights like Thor or Thanos, Warlock's trump card has always been intellectual. During The Infinity Gauntlet, Warlock used brains over brawn when he battled Thanos, claiming the completed Gauntlet after the Titan was stripped of his godhood.

Thanos himself has grudgingly admitted Warlock's edge, once calling him a "tactical genius." It's proof that in a universe of gods and monsters, intellect can dethrone brute strength. As the designated Avatar of Life, his purpose was never to overpower Thanos physically, but to outlast and outwit him whenever their paths crossed.

6 Zombie Hulk

On the twisted alternate reality of Earth-2149, home to the Marvel Zombies, an infected Bruce Banner (also known as Zombie Hulk) joined his fellow undead heroes in devouring victims across the galaxy, eventually consuming both the Silver Surfer and Galactus himself.

That grisly feast granted Hulk and the others a share of the Power Cosmic, giving them mastery over electromagnetism, gravity, and nuclear force. Combined with a zombified, endlessly regenerating physiology, this version of Hulk became one of the most destructive beings in that reality — dangerous enough to eventually turn on his own zombie allies.

Decades after the outbreak, Thanos joined the surviving Zombie Galactus, only to accuse Hulk of overconsuming and destabilizing the group. This proved to be a costly mistake. In uncontrolled rage, Hulk killed him outright. All this is to say: unlike a certain wrinkled-chin purple titan, Zombie Hulk has no use for artifacts or cosmic favor; boundless hunger is in itself sufficient.

5 Squirrel Girl

It might seem like a shock (and it indeed is), but Squirrel Girl Doreen Green once bested Thanos in a fight. Fans and critics alike have pointed to the fight as one of the most memorable examples of power-scaling being upended by cleverness rather than strength. And they’re not wrong.

Doreen Green developed squirrel-like features as a teenager, complete with buck teeth, claws, and a bushy prehensile tail. This earned her the nickname "Rodent" from classmates. Idolizing Iron Man, she built herself a costume, bonded with squirrel partners Monkey Joe and later Tippy-Toe, and set out to become the hero nobody foresaw.

That she and Tippy-Toe defeat Thanos was revealed in GLX-Mas Special #1 and later retold in detail in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #6. It’s an act that saved the entire multiverse and left the cosmic observer Uatu the Watcher visibly impressed.

4 Drax the Destroyer

No thanks to the MCU portraying Drax as a dumb and incompetent combatant, it might seem impossible to grasp (for non- Marvel comics readers at least) that he can and actually has defeated Thanos.

In the comics, Drax's origin story begins in tragedy. Arthur Douglas, an ordinary human, was killed alongside his family when Thanos destroyed their car during a scouting mission. The Titan god Kronos captured Douglas's soul and forged it into a new body with one singular purpose: to kill Thanos.

That purpose paid off during the Annihilation War, when Thanos kidnaps Drax's daughter, Moondragon, while secretly plotting to betray Annihilus. A rage-fueled Drax fights his way directly to the Mad Titan and physically overpowers him in hand/to-hand combat, punching a hole clean through his back and tearing out his heart in front of Moondragon.

It may be a bit funny that one of the most visceral, hand-to-hand defeats Thanos has ever suffered in the comics came not from the Hulk but from Drax, who mainstream audiences still see as unqualified for a combat role.

3 Captain Marvel

Even skipping the cosmic-level being (called Binary), Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel still ranks amongst the strongest beings to ever exist in Marvel lore, able to generate and control radiation, and survive unprotected in space. In other words, the on-paper stats highly favor her in a battle against Thanos.

However, "Captain Marvel versus Thanos" is a fight that rarely goes in her clear favor, despite coming up more than once. One notable instance came after the Inhuman precog Ulysses predicted that Thanos would attack Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. to steal the Cosmic Cube, prompting Carol to assemble a team of heroes to intercept him.

Despite the risk, her forces succeeded in thwarting Thanos's plan to seize the Cube, though the outcome was a costly, pyrrhic one. Her partner, James Rhodes (War Machine), was killed, and She-Hulk was left comatose. It would be surprising if these losses didn't happen: even stopping one of Thanos's schemes, let alone facing him directly, comes with a heavy toll.

2 Thor

As a founding Avenger and Asgard's greatest warrior, Thor is one of the few heroes built to trade blows with cosmic-tier threats. Marvel’s own power grid rates his strength as incalculable. Unsurprisingly, fans have constantly pitted the god of Thunder against the Mad Titan in hypothetical battles.

Of particular interest to this discourse is 2000’s Thor Vol. 2 #25, when Firelord delivers Odin-forged armor mid-battle after Thanos had already gotten the better of him once. Newly empowered, Thor smashed Thanos's skull with Mjolnir, ending the fight decisively — though later stories retconned this particular Thanos as a clone.

Retcon or not, the issue remains one of the clearest instances in the comics of Thor overpowering Thanos through sheer strength and Asgardian firepower. The battle showcased Thor at his most physically dominant, wielding Odin-forged armor that gave him the edge Thanos had denied him in their earlier clash.

1 Jean Grey

Jean Grey is one of Marvel's most powerful mutants. Phoenix, as she's called, is an Omega-level telepath and telekinetic who's been at the center of the X-Men since the team's founding. Her true power, however, comes from her bond with the Phoenix Force, a cosmic entity capable of generating unlimited energy and manipulating matter down to the molecular level.

The nature of Jean's power makes her one of the rare breeds who can battle Thanos solo and not only live to tell the tale but walk away with the winner’s medal. Such is the case in Marvel's 2024 Phoenix series, where a newly empowered Jean confronts Thanos, even as the latter wields a fresh power boost from the Dark Gods.

This battle marked a major milestone. It was the first time a Phoenix-empowered Jean took him down entirely on her own. It also reaffirmed the Phoenix Force's standing as one of the strongest in Marvel Comics.
