In a year when the genre is booming with original films and the return of some of the biggest sci-fi movie franchises ever, like Dune and Star Wars, all eyes are on sci-fi releases. Prime Video, like any other streaming service, continues to add a slew of new movies and TV shows every month, including Prime Video original movies and licensed films.
Now, one of the latter is trending high on the streaming service after arriving in the United States. The movie is a superhero entry that mixes sci-fi and fantasy elements. James Gunn's DC Universe is the new shared universe for the comic book giant that will hopefully be around for the next decade and more, and Prime Video is now the home to its first film.
Gunn's Superman movie, which was released in theaters back on July 11, 2025, is now streaming on Prime Video in the United States. The timing could not be better, as the film arrives before the DCU's next movie, Supergirl, which stars Superman's cousin, flies into theaters this Friday, June 26. Superman has become an instant Prime Video sensation.
Superman Has Become A Prime Video Streaming Hit In The United States
David Corenswet's first movie as Superman arrived on Prime Video recently, and it has already climbed the streaming service's nationwide charts to take the top spot. That is right, Superman is currently the most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States, which should boost interest in Milly Alcock's Supergirl movie, given how Corenswet will return as the Man of Steel in the new DC movie, and fans will get to see more of Supergirl after her debut at the end of the Superman movie. Superman has left behind movies like Your Fault: London, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, and more.
Something that is very interesting when looking at Prime Video's top movies in the US is how there is a meeting between Supergirl-related films, with both of them being key DC releases on top of that. While Superman leads the streamer's nationwide movie chart, Jason Momoa's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is currently Prime Video's 5th most-watched movie in the United States. Not only will Momoa return to DC in Supergirl, now playing the alien bounty hunter Lobo instead of Aquaman, but his trending movie was the final entry of the old DCEU, whereas 2025's Superman was the DCU's first movie.
Why Superman Is Worth Watching On Prime Video
As I already mentioned, there are many connections between Superman and Supergirl. As such, with the latter movie being released in theaters this week, there is no better time to rewatch Gunn's Superman movie on Prime Video. That said, there are plenty of reasons why viewers should check out Superman for the first time if they have not done so yet that are unrelated to Supergirl. For instance, after the DCEU's darker, more tortured take on the Man of Steel, Corenswet's Clark Kent is simply a ray of sunshine. He is the hopeful, optimistic Superman from the pages of DC Comics.
Superman's box office stands tall at $618.7 million with a near-perfect 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a high 83% critics' score.
As the first movie in the new DCU, Superman also did a lot of work to set up this shared universe. Multiple other heroes, like the Guy Gardner version of Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl, also appear to make the DCU feel like a lived-in DC universe. Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane is pitch-perfect, and her chemistry with Corenswet's Superman is on point. Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor is an evil genius you will love to hate, and more. Superman is a winning effort for DC and a must-watch on Prime Video.
