Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, Episode 6 - "Off-Hour"After 60 years, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds tells two origin stories about why the Starship Enterprise is so important to Scotty (Martin Quinn) and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Directed by Dan Liu and written by Bill Wolkoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6, "Off-Hour," plunges the USS Enterprise and its crew into a life-or-death catastrophe.
The Starship Enterprise is trapped in a slipstream wormhole and threatens to fly apart if it hits the warp threshold in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6, "Off-Hour." As Nurse Chapel desperately tries to save the mortally injured Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Scotty is the lone engineer capable of saving the Enterprise, but has a crisis of faith in his starship.
Of course, Chapel and Scotty are destined to remain aboard the USS Enterprise when Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes command in Star Trek: The Original Series. At that point, Chapel (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) is a mainstay in Sickbay while Scotty (James Doohan) is the Chief Engineer famed as a "miracle worker."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Reveals How Scotty Falls In Love With The Enterprise
Scotty did not join Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fully formed as the "miracle worker" fans already knew. The younger Lieutenant Montgomery Scott survived a Gorn attack on his former starship, the USS Stardiver, before joining Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) Enterprise. However, Scotty was far from in love with the Enterprise the way he is in Star Trek: The Original Series.
Mr. Scott was furious at the Enterprise when it was caught in a slipstream wormhole. Scotty blamed the Enterprise for "glitching" and giving no warning. Scotty revealed his true feelings to his Chief Engineer, Commander Pelia (Carol Kane), that he resents starships for getting their crews killed. However, the five-thousand-year-old Pelia knew how to reach her student and taught him his most important lesson.
In Star Trek: The Original Series, Scotty is so in tune with the Enterprise that he knows how fast it's traveling by touch and instinctively knows what repairs it needs. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' "Off-Hour" reveals it was Pelia who convinced Scotty that starships are "capable of miracles" and that he must become a "miracle worker," and form an almost mystical bond between engineer and starship.
"Off-Hour" is the origin of Scotty's destiny to become the USS Enterprise's Chief Engineer, and how he learned to fall in love with the Constitution-class starship. Scotty took what Pelia taught him to heart, and their climactic smiles when the crisis ended affirmed Mr. Scott's breakthrough. Now, fans know how and why Scotty became a "miracle worker."
Strange New Worlds Explains Why Chapel Dedicates Herself To The Enterprise
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6 also sheds light on a truth about Nurse Chapel: She has been on temporary duty assignment aboard the USS Enterprise since Strange New Worlds began. As Dr. M'Benga, who plans to leave Starfleet, pointed out, Christine "always has one foot out the door," which sparked an argument between them.

Chapel's courage, loyalty, and love for Dr. M'Benga are above and beyond in "Off-Hour." Christine risks her own life to save Joseph, defying the orders of Dr. Phil Boyce (Brian Markinson), the acting Chief Medical Officer, to let M'Benga die peacefully after a medical table nearly bisects him. Chapel refused to abandon Joseph, and her brilliant use of M'Benga's own research into strong force neutrinos not only saved her friend, but the Enterprise itself.
At the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 6, Chapel realized that M'Benga was right about her.
