6 Most Exciting Fantasy TV Shows To Binge-Watch, Ranked

3 weeks ago 19

Thanks to the advancement of film technology and increased budgets for networks, fantasy television is becoming a popular genre. It's made even more popular thanks to streaming services, many of which curate their own exclusive fantasy series in an effort to attract subscribers. What results are some pretty remarkable efforts, magical worlds, and bigger productions, the likes of which television had ever seen before.

With so many of these series, many viewers find themselves wanting to dive face-first into their immersive worlds, consuming as much of the content as they can. It doesn't even matter the subgenre or length: long or short, high or low fantasy, a lot of people are going to want to binge them. If you're the type of viewer who likes to go on these types of binges, look no further, because these are the best fantasy TV series to binge.

6 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' (2023–Present)

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on a novel series by Rick Riordan, which is heavily based on Greek mythology. There were two attempted movie adaptations in the 2010s, but these book-to-film versions were pretty awful and killed the franchise early on. Later, Disney decided to take another pass at it, with much better results. The story follows the eponymous Percy (Walker Scobell), a rebellious preteen who finds out that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon and that he is destined for greatness. He is sent to Camp Half-Blood, a hidden refuge for other demigods, where he learns to fight monsters and dangers straight out of Greek myth.

With its fair share of comedy, action, and adventure, the new Percy Jackson series is a much more faithful and infinitely better adaptation of the books than the movies were. This is thanks to Riordan himself having a much heavier hand in production than he did in the movies. In any event, this show is easy to binge, fun to watch, and perfect for pretty much the whole family, too. Whether you're a kid or an adult, you'll definitely find something to enjoy in this series.

5 'His Dark Materials' (2019–2022)

His Dark Materials is based on a trilogy of novels by Philip Pullman, which is set in a sort of alternate version of our own world. This actually isn't the first adaptation of the series, with 2008 seeing a movie. However, this movie was so bad and so different from the source material that it killed any prospects for sequels, and had the creators afraid to touch the IP for the next 11 years. Finally, HBO decided to take a crack at it, which was a much better effort. This time, the series was actually curated by fans, who poured their passion for the series into every frame of this series.

The result is a complete series that got to tell its story in full, and that was a major hit with the fans of the books. There aren't just elements of magic, but also steampunk and multiverse travel, making the world fascinating. HBO really did a wonderful job with this one, even if it was kind of underrated. What results is an experience that no fantasy fan is going to want to miss, and that can be binged and completed before the viewer even realizes how much they're consuming. It's just that immersive.

4 'The Wheel of Time' (2021–2025)

The Wheel of Time is based on a series of 15 novels written by the late Robert Jordan, with the remaining entries being taken over by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's untimely death. The series is set thousands upon thousands of years in the future, where a series of cataclysmic events has reverted human technology back to the Medieval Age. In this new, reformed world, a chosen one known as the Dragon Reborn emerges, but nobody knows who it is. Thus, a sorceress known as an Aes Sedai arrives in the remote region of the Two Rivers, seeking the Dragon Reborn. Her job is to find the Dragon Reborn and lead him on the right path, as his destiny is to either save the world from the clutches of the Dark One or to destroy it.

This is such an exciting series to binge because it only gets better as it goes on. It starts a bit rough, but each subsequent season only improves upon the previous one. Unfortunately, Amazon Prime cancelled the show right when it hit its stride, which is downright infuriating and insulting. It's really a shame this show never got the chance to conclude that it rightfully deserved, but for what we got, it's still a very fun watch about a deeply intriguing world filled with lovable and memorable characters and moments.

3 'Kingdom' (2019–2021)

Kingdom-1

Based on a web comic turned graphic novel, Kingdom is a South Korean fantasy-horror series set in the Kingdom of Joseon, which once encompassed the Korean Peninsula. At the end of the Middle Ages, the King of Joseon takes a new wife from the power-hungry Haewon Cho clan, getting her pregnant with his heir. However, when the king dies of smallpox, the Haewon Cho clan's claim to the throne is threatened by the existence of the king's adult son from a previous marriage. To secure their rule until the baby arrives, they bring the king back to life using a mythical resurrection plant. However, this goes terribly wrong, accidentally unleashing a zombie horde.

These zombies are not like regular zombies: they behave differently, have different weaknesses, and are only able to move about in the night. After sunrise, they're nothing more than ordinary corpses. With political intrigue, action, and horror, Kingdom is such a fantastic show to binge-watch because each episode reveals some new, exciting thing about the horde and about Haewon Cho. Even though this show sadly got soft-canceled, binging it is quite an experience.

2 'Game of Thrones' (2011–2019)

Game of Thrones is the fantasy TV show that started it all. It single-handedly kick-started the wave of epic fantasy TV shows that are all over the place now, made more prevalent by the rise of streaming platforms and on-demand viewing. Based on the books by George R. R. Martin, the world takes place in the world of Westeros, where a supernatural threat is rising in the lands to the North, beyond the Wall. Meanwhile, nine royal families, the most powerful in the land, are all squabbling over the throne, oblivious to the greater danger that they all face.

This is easily one of the most bingeable TV shows of all time, with eight seasons to get through and a complex story to explore. The only reason this show doesn't take the number one spot is that many were disappointed by the latter two seasons, so the binge might end on a sour note for a significant portion of viewers. That said, the rest of it is absolutely incredible and is so easy to get lost in with its immersive world and slew of memorable characters.

1 'House of the Dragon' (2022–Present)

House of the Dragon is the long-awaited prequel to Game of Thrones, which takes place 300 years before the events of the main series. The show largely follows the rise of the Targaryen dynasty, a noble house that has almost entirely disappeared by the time Game of Thrones rolls around. However, during the time of this prequel, the Targaryens were a force to be reckoned with, establishing the Seven Kingdoms and single-handedly conquering all the realms within it. Like its predecessor, this series is based on works by George R. R. Martin.

This show has only two seasons at the moment, but a third is on the way. While Game of Thrones isn't fantastic for everybody due to its lackluster finale, so far, House of the Dragon is proving to be a much better bingeing experience. There are interesting characters and events, and it's a thrilling bit of Westerosi history that the world desperately needed, which is why it's the most bing-worthy fantasy series ever made, hands down.
