A powerful mid-range GPU and a free game
It's been a bit of a miserable time for shopping for components like RAM, SSDs, and GPUs - well, essentially anything that needs memory to function - as shortage-spiked prices remain high across the board. It means my usual task of deals-hunting on these types of items has turned more into a form of damage limitation against these rises, and this Asus RTX Prime 5070 graphics card for £520 from CCL feels like the best price it's likely to be for some time. We have seen the 5070 for well under £500 in the past, but in the current climate, this is about as low as we can hope for.
The RTX 5070 doesn't necessarily move the needle too much from last gen's RTX 4070 Super refresh, as James found out in his review with remarkably similar performance between the two cards at both 1440p and 4K. For reference, there is a modest improvement in some titles, such as 88fps in F1 2024 against the 4070 Super's 80fps at 1440p, and 105fps in Cyberpunk 2077 against the 4070 Super's 89fps. Nonetheless, in other titles here, such as Assassin's Creed Mirage and Horizon Forbidden West, the numbers are virtually identical.
The noteworthy benefit of this current-gen card over the last model is the presence of DLSS 4 that is, on the whole, a better upscaler than its predecessor found on the RTX 4070 Super. It also adds Multi-Frame Generation (MFG), which the newer DLSS 4.5 update has developed further, with an added 6x multiplier and 'dynamic' MFG option.
The latter involves setting a target FPS for a game in the Nvidia app, enabling multi-frame-gen in the game, and the upscaler will scale the multiplier needed to hit that target frame rate based on the FPS figure you're getting in-game. It's all very clever, and when I saw it used at a recent Nvidia event, there wasn't any jarring stutters or funny business when the multiplier went up or down. Just remember that MFG, like all forms of frame gen, best work in games that can run well without it - it's not a replacement for 'true' performance.
If you're on slightly older hardware and want to move to the latest generation of Nvidia GPUs, the RTX 5070 is a capable mid-range card for 1440p gaming, and seems like a strong upgrade target for most folks in the current climate. Oh, and with this CCL deal, you also get a free copy of Pragmata bundled in as part of an ongoing Nvidia promo, which isn't half bad as a sweetener.
