Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Since the very first entry was launched way back in 1987, the Final Fantasy franchise has become a cornerstone of the gaming industry. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Square Enix RPG series boasts 16 mainline entries. However, if you were to consider all of the prequels, spin-offs, tactical subseries, and mobile titles, this would equal up to 80 unique entries over the past four decades.

Now with even more titles in the pipeline, such as Final Fantasy Resonance and Final Fantasy VII Revelation, it is an exciting time for fans.

However, if you cannot wait that long, and want another game to tide you over, we have compiled a list of five free Steam games which will scratch that Final Fantasy itch.

5 Persona5: The Phantom X

 The Phantom X featuring Wonder.

As a spin-off of 2016's Persona 5, Persona5: The Phantom X is a 2025 RPG which takes place in modern-day Tokyo. As always, players will take on the role of a group of characters who are able to wield Personas, a physical manifestation of one's psyche that is strengthened in battle by forging bonds with others.

In this installment, you will follow the story of a high-school student, codenamed "Wonder", who seeks to retake the hopes and desires of humanity after almost losing them himself.

Featuring the turn-based combat and dungeon-crawling that Final Fantasy enjoyers know and love, this Persona spin-off may have slipped under the radar, but it is now available to download for free courtesy of Steam.

4 Wuthering Waves

Wuthering Waves recently found itself enjoying a surge of popularity thanks to its successful Cyberpunk 2077 collaboration, but this free-to-play gacha game is still worth playing in its own right. Launched back in 2024, this open-world RPG set in a post-apocalyptic universe is perfect for fans of Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail, with gameplay consisting of real-time combat, exploration, and a whole lot of gambling.

The fantastical, open-world, post-apocalyptic setting is reminiscent of some of our favorite Final Fantasy titles and with hundreds of hours worth of content, this freebie is not one to be missed out on.

3 The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin

The Seven Deadly Sins Origin Boat-1

Set in, and inspired by The Seven Deadly Sins universe, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is a 2026 open-world anime RPG where players will step into the role of Prince Tristan of Liones and explore an open-world Britannia. As you set out to return order and peace to a world thrown into chaos by the collision of time and space itself, you will assemble your team in a faithful adaptation of the hit anime series.

Featuring some well-known characters, as well as some original designs, you will get to experience a diverse roster of heroes, each with unique abilities, and uncover an original story, and better yet, you won't have to pay a penny.

2 Blue Protocol: Star Resonance

 Star Resonance

Now it is time for an epic MMORPG experience with Blue Protocol: Star Resonance. Released back in 2025 and set in the Blue Protocol universe, this free-to-play action RPG will see you create your own hero, assemble your team for strategic raids, or just simply relax, with the ability to hang out with friends, fish, craft, and, of course, explore the vast open-world.

Now, thanks to this new expansion, players can enjoy a new class: Twin Striker, as well as a new musician system, three new maps, six dungeons and new stories to help learn more about some of your favorite NPCs. With regular updates, now is the perfect time to get stuck into this epic free MMORPG.
