The anime industry has been constantly evolving in terms of productions, formats, and animation quality. However, what does not seem to change is the devotion to certain classic anime franchises. These titles have left such a profound mark on the medium that there are renewed efforts to revitalize them through new adaptations, aiming to bring their stories back into the spotlight and attract a new generation of fans. That's why, in addition to works like Ranma 1/2 and Rurouni Kenshin receiving new seasons, other anime remakes are currently in development.

2025 saw a wealth of anime remakes, such as YAIBA: Samurai Legend and Cat's Eye, that breathed new life into beloved IPs. While Summer 2026 already features classic stories reimagined as modern anime series, including The Ribbon Hero and Goodbye, Lara, other studios are also dusting off titles from several decades ago to revive their fanbase and expand their legacies. Promising stunning animation and an enhanced narrative for both fans and newcomers, these upcoming anime remakes and reboots are set to premiere in the fall of 2026 and the years that follow.

👊

Goku

“I am the hope of the universe. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace.” You’re a pure-hearted warrior who lives for the thrill of the fight. Every challenge is an opportunity, every enemy a potential friend, and every defeat just fuel to come back stronger. People are drawn to your infectious optimism and unbreakable spirit, even when your naivety drives them crazy. You’d give your last Senzu Bean to a stranger and charge headfirst into a battle you can’t win — not because you’re reckless, but because you genuinely believe that pushing past your limits is the only way to grow. Like Goku, your greatest power isn’t your ki — it’s your ability to inspire everyone around you to be better.

Pure-Hearted Fearless Limitless Inspiring

👑

Vegeta

“I do not fear this new challenge. Rather like a true warrior, I will rise to meet it.” You carry yourself with the pride of royalty and the ferocity of a born warrior. Second place is not in your vocabulary, and you’d rather break your body than your spirit. People might call you arrogant, but beneath that iron exterior lies someone who has learned to fight not just for themselves, but for the people they’ve quietly grown to love. Your journey is one of evolution — from cold-blooded conqueror to Earth’s fiercest protector — and every scar you carry is proof that pride and love can coexist. Like Vegeta, you don’t just want to be the strongest — you need to earn it on your own terms.

Proud Relentless Fierce Evolving

🧘

Piccolo

“Sometimes, we have to look beyond what we want and do what’s best.” You’re the one everyone depends on when things fall apart — the calm center in the middle of chaos. While others charge in recklessly or let their ego do the talking, you see the bigger picture and make the hard calls that need making. You didn’t choose to care about people, but somewhere along the way it happened, and now you’d sacrifice everything for those you’ve taken under your wing. Stoic on the surface, deeply loyal underneath, you’re the mentor, the strategist, and the last line of defense all in one. Like Piccolo, your true strength is wisdom — and the courage to do what’s right even when no one is watching.

Even though fans expected a spectacular revival for the anime, the start of Dragon Ball Super with the God of Destruction arc sparked significant backlash after being plagued by a flawed production schedule that resulted in poor-quality animation and pacing. That's why Dragon Ball Super: Beerus aims to be an enhanced version of this story arc, promising impressive animation and superior battle sequences.

The project initially raised doubts among many fans, who viewed it more as a Dragon Ball Kai-style remaster than a remake. However, the fact that Toei Animation has confirmed the inclusion of new cuts and a narrative more faithful to the original manga suggests it's intended to be a complete restructuring of the story. While the exact release date and episode count have not yet been revealed, many fans expect that Dragon Ball Super: Beerus could also kick off a remake of Resurrection 'F' in the future.

Magic Knight Rayearth

Magic Knight Rayearth 2026 anime
  • Release date: October 7, 2026
  • Studio: E&H Production
  • Streaming Platform: To be confirmed

A wave of nostalgia has hit isekai fans with the announcement of a remake of Magic Knight Rayearth, an anime considered one of the pillars of the genre. This remake commemorates the anime's 30th anniversary and can be described as a modern take on CLAMP's story. Although E&H Production is a relatively new studio, Magic Knight Rayearth's new trailer already hints at high-quality animation. Furthermore, the character redesigns, while retaining an unmistakable 90s aesthetic, are perfectly suited to appeal to a new generation of fans.

Magic Knight Rayearth follows three high school students who are transported to another world and entrusted with a great mission, acquiring legendary magical weapons to rescue the captive princess and save the world. Although Magic Knight Rayearth might appear to be just another magical girl anime, it is more than just another shojo series, having revitalized the fantasy genre by incorporating mecha battles and plot twists that were far darker and more tragic than viewers expected.

Given the differences between the 1994 anime and CLAMP's original manga, specifically the changes made to the second half and the filler content in the classic anime, which aired before the manga had concluded, fans hope this new adaptation will remain more faithful to the original story. Eliminating the extensive filler would result in a shorter, faster-paced series, as the manga consists of only two story arcs spanning six volumes. This could potentially allow for a complete adaptation of the source material in the upcoming Magic Knight Rayearth remake.

The One Piece

  • Release Window: February 2027
  • Studio: Wit Studio
  • Streaming Platform: Netflix

One of the most unexpected news for fans was that a One Piece remake would release before the original anime had even concluded. Yet, the fact remains that after 25 years on air, the series' early episodes by Toei Animation suffer from both dated animation and uneven pacing. Consequently, The One Piece is set to become the ideal entry point for viewers, with fewer episodes due to having a more condensed narrative and offering refreshed visuals for the series' first story arcs that are sure to appeal to a modern audience.

One Piece is produced by Wit Studio, responsible for adapting Spy x Family and the early seasons of Attack on Titan, so high-quality animation is all but guaranteed. Although the remake will adapt the East Blue Saga from Eiichiro Oda’s manga, it was announced that the anime will be released on Netflix in batches, with the first consisting of only seven episodes. Fortunately, One Piece's remake will span a total of 300 minutes. The One Piece's first season is expected to cover up to the Baratie arc, implying that, rather than the standard 20-minute runtime, some episodes could have extended lengths.

Astro Boy Reboot

  • Release Window: 2027
  • Studio: Method Animation, Shibuya International and Tezuka Productions.
  • Streaming Platform: Wonderland Junior TV

More than 60 years after its original broadcast, the classic series Astro Boy, created by Osamu Tezuka, is receiving a modern reboot. Astro Boy Reboot is a co-production between French and Japanese studios and was originally announced in 2022 to be developed by Thomas Astruc, the creator of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. Unfortunately, the director stated on his official X account that he had left the project due to artistic disagreements, noting that the reboot aims to target young children, unlike the scope of Tezuka's original story.

Astro Boy Reboot's new director is Nicolas Hess, and while the series' initial drafts featured a 2D art style, the project was reworked to use 3D CGI animation. After years of development, a sneak peek of the series was presented at the 2026 Annecy Animation Film Festival. Astro Boy Reboot is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2027 on Mediawan's Wonderland Junior TV channel, as reported by Deadline. Even though the series might tone down the original work's more mature elements, it could also expand Astro Boy's legacy among a new audience.

World Trigger

World Trigger Reboot Visual
  • Studio: Toei Animation

Although many fans were expecting a new installment to continue the story following the third season in 2022, Toei Animation surprised everyone by announcing a World Trigger remake at Jump Festa 2026. The announcement was accompanied by a promotional image featuring Yuma Kuga, confirming that the remake will cover the first season of World Trigger, which premiered in 2014.

The first season of World Trigger is the most criticized part of the anime. As with series like One Piece and Dragon Ball, Toei Animation employed a weekly broadcast format, which compromised the visual quality of World Trigger's early story arcs due to the tight deadlines imposed on the animators. The anime also suffered from pacing issues, featuring filler arcs and drawn-out scenes that disrupted the story's flow.

Therefore, a World Trigger adaptation with superior animation quality that remains faithful to Daisuke Ashihara's work, which has established itself as one of Shōnen Jump's best ongoing manga series, could revitalize interest in the franchise and turn it into a global hit. A release date hasn't yet been set, but further information regarding the World Trigger remake might be revealed in the final quarter of 2026.
