Shaun Corley is a Staff Writer for ScreenRant, a position he has held for five years. While he enjoys many types of comics and graphic novels, he has a particular interest in the licensed Star Trek titles.

42 years later, a science fiction cult classic from the 1980s is quietly returning with a brand-new sequel. In the wake of Star Wars’ success, studios began turning out big-budget genre pictures, so much that the era is viewed as something of a “golden age” for science fiction movies.

Released in 1984, The Last Starfighter was one such movie. Directed by Nick Castle and written by Jonathan Betuel, and starring Lance Guest, Katherine Mary Stewart and Robert Preston, the movie has long since become a cult classic among the science fiction community. However, despite its iconic status, the rights to The Last Starfighter have proven elusive.

The complicated rights situation surrounding The Last Starfighter has derailed any talks of a remake or continuation. Original writer, Jonathan Betuel has tried to get a new version off the ground, to no avail. Other filmmakers, including Seth Rogen and Steven Spielberg, have also expressed interest in a new movie. Now, at long last, The Last Starfighter is returning.

Butuel's other writing credits include My Science Project.

Mad Cave Studios, the indie publisher behind the recent Flash Gordon reboot, have obtained the rights to produce comic books based on The Last Starfighter. Betuel will be involved, as will Paul Davidson. The book will be written by Deric A. Hughes and Benjamin Raab, with art by Willi Roberts, and is expected to release sometime in 2026.

At this time, Mad Cave is keeping the details of The Last Starfighter’s new book under wraps, but, speaking with Comic Book Resources, Butuel stated he was excited to take the project “into the multiverse.” Butuel did not elaborate on what was meant by this, but most likely it will involve stories from around The Last Starfighter universe.

Out of the many science fiction, horror and fantasy movies released in the 1980s, The Last Starfighter is one of the best remembered. At its core, the movie is wish fulfillment for many young people. Alex Rogan, The Last Starfighter’s central character, is a young man unsure of his future, who is given the opportunity of a lifetime.

Perhaps the coolest aspect of The Last Starfighter is the wider universe the movie hints at. The Star League, who were responsible for the Starfighters, is an equivalent of Star Trek’s United Federation of Planets. The Starfighter league was made up of species from across the galaxy, meaning countless stories remain to be told.

Of even more interest is what happened to Alex Rogan after the end credits rolled. The Last Starfighter concluded when Alex and his girlfriend Maggie left Earth to help the Star League rebuild the Starfighter league. Mad Cave’s new title should pick up this thread, perhaps with Alex returning to Earth to recruit more Starfighters.
