33 Years Later, Power Rangers Prepares to Change Genres in Its New Series

Power Rangers is one of the most iconic franchises in the superhero and action-adventure genres, but now the franchise is looking to dip its toe into another beloved genre. While this is a delightful surprise, the bold move also feels fitting, especially since this genre experimentation will take place within the franchise’s most ambitious series in its 33-year history.

Power Rangers fans don’t need to fret. The PR isn’t completely stepping away from its franchise-defining stranglehold on the superhero and action-adventure genres. Instead, the Rangers are set to explore one of the most well-established movie subgenres within the action genre: the heist genre.

However, this exploration won’t be taking place in a movie, but rather within the franchise’s newest series, Power Rangers Unlimited. Writers Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito, alongside artist Alessio Zonno, launched Power Rangers Unlimited #1 on July 1, with subsequent issues already slated for September and October. With its first issue now available to read, the series has already received an overwhelmingly positive reception from fans.

That positive reception is reflected on discussion boards like Reddit and on sites such as League of Comic Geeks, where the first issue currently holds a 4.3 out of 5-star rating. The series is already considered one of the franchise’s most ambitious projects, as it brings together fan-favorite Rangers from every season and every series. Now, that ambition is set to grow even further, with Power Rangers Unlimited confirming a foray into the heist subgenre.

Set to release on September 16, 2026, is Power Rangers Unlimited #3 from writers Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito, with art by Alessio Zonno. BOOM! Studios has already shared the official synopsis for the issue, which states: “It’s the heist of the century...and it's gonna be Serpenterrific! Who doesn’t love a good heist? Kwan's Seven are on the scene to pull off a high-tech swindle! Can they fly under the radar at this glitzy event hosted by the galaxy’s most evil?”

The synopsis continues teasing, “Join Conner McKnight, Will Aston, Sarah Thompson, and more of your favorite Power Rangers as they go up against Broodwing to pull off an intergalactic mission that’ll knock your socks off!” It’s this synopsis that confirms the franchise’s foray into the heist subgenre, promising to add a refreshing new element to the Power Rangers’ typical adventures.

At the moment, details surrounding the heist remain scarce. However, fans can likely expect beloved genre staples such as assembling the crew, meticulous planning, and executing the mission to unfold on the comic pages. Of those elements, assembling the crew is where this issue is likely to stand out the most, as the core premise of Power Rangers Unlimited allows Rangers from different continuities to join forces.

We already have confirmation of at least three key players thanks to the synopsis, which reveals that Conner McKnight, Will Aston, and Sarah Thompson will be part of the heist crew. These characters come from Power Rangers Dino Thunder, Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, and Power Rangers Ninja Steel, respectively, making for a particularly colorful team lineup.

It’s only because of the exceptionally unique premise of Power Rangers Unlimited that these three characters are able to come together, as they never would have crossed paths before this series due to originating from entirely different eras of the franchise. That makes the heist all the more exciting, as it perfectly embraces one of the genre’s defining elements: a diverse crew of specialists coming together to accomplish a single mission.
