Its reputation only grew with the release of Mewtwo Strikes Back, which showed that the powerful creature was a surprisingly complex antagonist that forced players to question its origins and the implications of how it came to be. Mewtwo has since returned throughout the games, anime, manga, trading card game, and countless spin-offs, including major roles in Super Smash Bros. and Pokémon GO.
The anime has also brought Mewtwo back multiple times, from its early connection to Giovanni and Team Rocket to a memorable return in Pokémon Journeys, while later stories have even introduced a separate Mega Evolution Mewtwo. However, after 30 years, Mewtwo is getting a fresh new look as part of Team Rocket's new lineup, and will officially be available this week (via YouTube).
Mewtwo Officially Returns With A Dark New Look
As part of the newly announced Team Rocket's Ambition Booster Pack for Pokémon TCG Pocket, Mewtwo has officially been given a brand-new look and a dedicated Team Rocket Mewtwo variant that will be included in the packs when they release. The expansion brings Giovanni's infamous organization back into the spotlight, with several familiar Team Rocket-associated Pokémon appearing alongside new themed Trainer cards and artwork.
Aside from Mewtwo, among the biggest inclusions are Arbok and Persian, two Pokémon closely tied to Jessie, James, and Giovanni across the wider franchise, while the Legendary bird trio of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are getting new variants as well.
Mewtwo Joins Team Rocket Again In New TCG Pocket Release
Mewtwo may be the obvious headliner, but fans hoping for an overwhelmingly powerful new card could come away a little underwhelmed. Its showcased attack can dish out substantial damage, but it also deals 70 damage to Mewtwo itself, creating a major drawback that players will need to build around.
Even so, the Team Rocket branding and fresh artwork should make it appealing for longtime Mewtwo fans. Team Rocket's Ambition arrives in Pokémon TCG Pocket on August 26, bringing the villainous faction back into the spotlight with an entire wave of new digital cards that hardcore fans will definitely want to snag to continue celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary in style.
