Netflix features a treasure trove of amazing movies to watch, and this week's picks run the gamut from beloved family films to hair-raising horror. Essentially popularizing the streaming service format as it's known today, Netflix broke the mold when it began hosting digital content in 2007. Since then, it has grown into the biggest name in the industry.

The movie catalog on Netflix is so massive that it can be overwhelming to decide what to watch. When Netflix's original movies are thrown in, there are literally dozens upon dozens of films vying for the audience's precious watch minutes. Thankfully, this handy weekly guide offers a curated selection of the best of what's streaming each week on the platform.

3 Night At The Museum (2006)

Ben Stiller shines a flashlight as Robin Williams looks on in Night at the Museum

Night at the Museum is one of the most imaginative family comedies from the 2000s, and it remains a beloved Aughts franchise. It stars Ben Stiller as an overnight security guard at a museum who discovers that the exhibits come to life at night. Stiller is joined by an all-star cast including Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, and Dick Van Dyke.

Its clever premise and innate sense of wonder and whimsy make it a must-watch for families with kids, but it can be enjoyed as a fun flick by adults too. Stiller is perfectly cast as the hapless everyman, and co-stars like Robin Williams steal the show. It's now streaming on Netflix, just in time for the movie's 20th birthday.

2 Homefront (2013)

If there's one thing in life that can be counted on, it's that Jason Statham movies will do well on streaming. Homefront casts the action star as an ex-DEA agent who settles into a bucolic life, only to find his family's peace threatened by a violent drug lord. The film hearkens back to the gritty anti-crime thrillers of the '70s.

Homefront is no masterpiece, but it's a fun ride with lots of highlights. Jason Statham has made many films like Homefront, but the 2013 movie is one of his better efforts. With support from actors like Winona Ryder, it is elevated above Statham's usual action fare. His movies do so well on streaming because they're always so watchable.

1 His House (2020)

His House is a forgotten Netflix original movie that is still worth watching. The understated horror film concerns a refugee family who moves to the UK, only to be haunted by ghosts from their own past. Remi Weekes' directorial debut scored an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fitting squarely in the "elevated horror" space, His House uses the trapping of horror to explore deeper issues and themes. Nevertheless, it's still capable of conjuring up more than a few legitimately frightening images. The movie never got the same viral success as other streaming horror films, but the Netflix hidden gem is one hidden gem that's worth digging up.
