There is so much new stuff to watch on HBO Max this weekend, but these three films should go straight to the top of your must-see list. With August just getting started, it's only been a few days since HBO Max added a ton of new content to their catalog. This means that there are now even more movies to sort through.
While HBO Max's movie selection is decidedly smaller than competitors like Netflix or Prime Video, it's still quite a chore to scroll through page after page of films to find something to watch. The constant churn makes it even more difficult because of all the coming and going that happen at the beginning and end of each month.
Thankfully, the best of what's available on HBO Max tends to float to the top, and the real gems are easy to spot. Max's catalog is highly curated, so there are fewer duds than on the aforementioned streamers. Even if you can't go wrong, there are so many strong flicks on HBO Max that it's hard to know which ones are worth your time.
This weekend's movie list is a bit all over the place, but it does represent the best of what the streamer has to offer. There is a chilling modern horror film, an award-winning action thriller, and a 2026 black comedy starring Zendaya that is already at the top of the streaming charts. If you only have time to watch three movies this weekend, make sure it's these prime picks.
3 Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
Almost 15 years after the release of the fifth installment in the series, Final Destination: Bloodlines arrived to breathe life back into the dormant horror franchise. A college student must find a way to reverse the curse put on her family in order to save them (and herself) from a grisly fate. All the movies in the series follow a similar pattern, and it really comes down to the kills.
Final Destination: Bloodlines has great tension and even stronger payoffs, and actually features a story that puts some fun twists on the well-worn formula. It hearkens back to a simpler time in horror history without coming off as cheesy or dated. If you're looking for an old-fashioned horror flick to watch late at night, you can do so much worse than the sixth Final Destination movie.
2 Sicario (2015)
Credit: MovieStillsDBBefore he was enthralling viewers with the drama on the Dutton ranch, Taylor Sheridan penned the script for 2015's Sicario. A rookie FBI agent is assigned to a task force that works on both sides of the Mexican border to flush out a deadly cartel leader. The gritty action thriller has it all, from a tight script with rich themes, to exciting moments of tension that rival even the best its genre has to offer.
The brilliance of Sicario is the richness of its storytelling, and every detail is fleshed out with precision. The cast is phenomenal, and each character has depth. It's a cynical and morally grey look at one of the most complex political issues of the 21st century, and it leaves the viewer with a lot to mull over after the credits roll.
1 The Drama (2026)
There's a reason that The Drama currently sits at the top of HBO Max's movie charts, and the Zendaya vehicle will likely stay there for quite some time. The story concerns a young couple on the eve of their wedding, who discover dark secrets about each other that threaten to ruin their relationship. What could have easily been a melodrama is handled with pitch-black humor instead.
Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are a strong duo, and the film really gives them a big stage to play on. The movie's title is quite apt, and the film seems to revel in the juicy gossip of it all. There aren't many explosive twists or shocking swerves, but the 2026 surprise hit from A24 will keep you glued to the edge of your seat. The Drama is one of the amazing new releases in HBO Max's catalog.
