Over the weekend, anime fans were treated to a number of exciting announcements during the annual Anime NYC expo. One of the most exciting news came from distributor GKIDS, which announced its acquisition of the North American rights to the cult film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. This will finally bring one of the most impressive anime films ever made to the big screen in a way few fans have ever experienced before.
GKIDS plans to give the movie a full theatrical release in North America in 2027, though details will come later. In addition to theatrical distribution, GKIDS also has plans to produce physical home media for Bloodlust. When the film originally released in the United States in 2001, it screened in only twelve theaters.

Bloodlust was produced at Madhouse, the studio behind Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, one of the central figures of the adult anime boom of the 1980s and 1990s. It's based on the novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano of Final Fantasy fame. The legendary artist is also responsible for the character design for the movie. After a young woman is seemingly abducted by the vampire Baron Meier Link, her father hires D – a vampire-hunting “Dunpeal” – to rescue her. As D rides across the wastelands, he must compete against a group of tough mercenary hunters, and confront the complex truth about the woman.

While Bloodlust was critically acclaimed, it never managed to fully break into the upper echelon of renowned anime films of the era like Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Over time, it has become a cult classic in the anime community thanks to some truly astounding production design. The gothic world of Bloodlust is rendered with a unique blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and digital compositing. The details in the animation help reinforce the dense world-building and visual aesthetics, inviting audiences into the story. Thanks to GKIDS, fans will finally be able to experience Bloodlust as it was always intended to be seen.
That wasn't all the Vampire Hunter D news at Anime NYC. Dark Horse announced a new four-issue comic series titled Fortress of Blood. The eighth book in the series, The Rose Princess, will also receive an English translation due out next June. 2027 is going to be a good year for Vampire Hunter D fans.
