A Marvel showrunner and Star Wars director have officially joined the upcoming fantasy adaptation of Warrior Cats.
Erin Hunter's Warrior Cats book series features nine arcs told across six books, beginning with The Prophecies Begin, which was published in 2003. The children's fantasy novels revolve around feral cats who belong to various Clans and the conflicts between them. More than 90 million copies, translated into more than 38 languages, have been sold globally, making the series a bestseller.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, an animated Warrior Cats television show has been officially greenlit by Coolabi Group and Tencent Video, with A.C. Bradley aboard as the showrunner and Rodrigo Blaas as the director. This is the first authorized adaptation of the source material and the story will be based on the story arcs in The Prophecies Begin. Read a statement about the show below from Tina Ma, the co-president and chief creative officer of Tencent Video:
We’re excited to partner with Coolabi on Warrior Cats, a franchise that embodies the future of global storytelling. Together we’re bringing the beloved Warrior Cats world to new platforms and markets in a way that feels both familiar and fresh, creating an animated series designed to captivate existing fans and win new ones.
Prior to Warrior Cats, Bradley was the creator, head writer, and an executive producer of Marvel's What If...? and was a writer and consulting producer for Ms. Marvel. Blaas also has experience working with major franchises on Disney+, as he directed Star Wars: Visions season 2, episode 1, "Sith." The two creatives previously worked together on Netflix's Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia series, with Blaas as the supervising director and an executive producer and Bradley as a writer.
As veterans when it comes to animation and franchises, they are now taking on another popular IP. According to Coolabi, user-generated Warrior Cats content brings in more than 50 million views per month on YouTube and almost 3 billion views per month on TikTok. On Roblox, the Warrior Cats game has been played more than 728 million times.
Additionally, the first rollout of officially licensed Warrior Cats toys is underway due to a retail tie-in between Coolabi and Bonkers Toys in the United States. Allison Watkins, the Director of Consumer Products and TV Distribution at Coolabi Group shared that, "We anticipate a whirlwind year ahead for the brand.”
Bradley and Blaas' projects before Warrior Cats have been generally well-received. On Rotten Tomatoes, What If...? has an 82% critics' score, Ms. Marvel has a near-perfect 98% critics' score and an 80% audience score, and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia has a 96% audience score. Star Wars: Visions season 2 has a 100% critics' score, the episode Blaas directed has 7.7/10 on IMDb, and ScreenRant ranked it as the third best of the season.
