20 Best Apocalypse Manhwa To Read After Solo Leveling

3 hours ago 22

With Solo Leveling fans eagerly awaiting the anime's next chapter, now is an excellent time to explore the manhwa that might fill the void. The ongoing Solo Leveling: Ragnarok offers another way to revisit the franchise's world, but plenty of other series deliver the same addictive combination of dangerous monsters, extraordinary abilities, and humanity fighting for survival. Some follow a familiar progression-fantasy formula, while others take the apocalypse in unexpected and often horrifying directions.

Part of Solo Leveling's appeal lies in watching Sung Jinwoo rise from an underpowered hunter into a force capable of challenging seemingly unbeatable enemies. That satisfying sense of progression is only one piece of the puzzle, though. The manhwa landscape is packed with stories featuring deadly dungeon systems, catastrophic invasions, desperate survivors, and protagonists determined to turn impossible odds in their favor. Whether readers want another overpowered lead, an intricate fantasy world, or a genuinely terrifying vision of humanity's collapse, these manhwa offer plenty of reasons to keep turning the pages.

Doom Breaker (2021)

Created by Blue-Deep

Zephyr From Doom Breaker holding his sword

Humanity's final warrior, Zephyr, falls in battle against Tartarus, the god of destruction, after a devastating war leaves civilization on the brink of extinction. Rather than letting humanity's story end there, the gods give Zephyr another opportunity by sending him ten years into the past. Stripped of his former strength and forced back into servitude, he must rebuild his abilities before the same catastrophe unfolds.

Like Solo Leveling, Doom Breaker delivers spectacular battles, dangerous monsters, and a protagonist whose growing strength makes him an increasingly formidable opponent. However, Zephyr's advantage comes from remembering a future that has yet to happen, giving his journey a strong element of strategy and revenge. His challenge isn't simply to become powerful enough to win, but to identify the betrayals that destroyed humanity and change the fate of those he failed to protect.

Return to Player (2021)

Based on the original work by INDEX, adapted by UMKY, and illustrated by SEHON

Return to Player manhwa

In Return to Player, humanity becomes trapped in a deadly game orchestrated by the gods, with monsters appearing and ordinary people forced to fight for their lives. Sehan Kim eventually discovers the horrifying outcome of this twisted competition: everyone dies except him. Given the opportunity to return to the beginning of the disaster, he decides to use his knowledge of what happened to challenge the beings responsible and find a way to save humanity.

Readers who enjoy the game-like mechanics and escalating stakes of Solo Leveling should find plenty to appreciate here. Sehan has an advantage similar to Jinwoo's unusual ability to navigate a world governed by unfamiliar rules, but his greatest weapon is his knowledge of the future. Every encounter offers an opportunity to prepare for a threat he remembers, although changing the outcome becomes increasingly complicated as the gods and their game introduce new dangers.

The Advanced Player of the Tutorial Tower (2021)

Created by Bangguseok Gimssi, adapted by Juyeong Hwang, and illustrated by Topp

advanced player of the tutorial tower cover art featuring kim hyeonu holding a slipper.

When mysterious towers filled with regenerating monsters appear, Hyeonu Kim becomes trapped inside one of them. Even after completing its challenges, he cannot escape, forcing him to endure an extraordinary twelve years of repeated battles. By the time he finally returns to the outside world, he has become one of the most powerful beings alive. Unfortunately for Hyeonu, his freedom introduces an entirely new set of problems, including the mystery behind his imprisonment and the monsters threatening the world beyond the tower.

Unlike Jinwoo, who gradually discovers the full extent of his abilities, Hyeonu emerges from his ordeal already possessing overwhelming strength. This makes the series particularly appealing to readers who enjoy watching an overpowered protagonist handle enemies that other fighters struggle to defeat. The manhwa also incorporates more comedy into its action, giving its monster-filled setting a different personality without sacrificing the escalating threats, supernatural mysteries, and impressive displays of power that define the genre.

I'm the Max-Level Newbie (2022)

Based on the original work by Maslow, adapted by WAN.Z (REDICE STUDIO), and illustrated by swingbat

I’m the Max Level Newbie manhwa

Kang Jinhyeok is a gaming streamer whose greatest accomplishment is clearing an incredibly difficult game called Tower of Trials. When the game starts losing its popularity, he prepares to move on, only for the tower to suddenly appear in the real world. Humanity now faces a deadline to clear its floors before time runs out, and Jinhyeok possesses something nobody else does: extensive knowledge of the challenges waiting ahead. He decides to turn his gaming experience into an advantage in the fight for survival.

The premise offers a familiar mix of dangerous monsters, powerful abilities, and increasingly difficult encounters, but Jinhyeok's personality separates him from more serious protagonists like Jinwoo. Rather than learning every mechanic from scratch, he already understands the system and knows how to exploit its weaknesses. Watching him apply that knowledge to real-world threats creates a satisfying power fantasy, particularly when opponents underestimate him or assume that clearing the tower is beyond their abilities.

The Player Who Can't Level Up (2022)

Created by STUDIO KHIT, Tae_A, Parrot Kim, and GaVinGe

The player who can't level up manhwa

For Kim Kigyu, becoming a player initially seems like an opportunity to escape his ordinary life and enter a world filled with extraordinary possibilities. Instead, he encounters a frustrating obstacle: no matter what he does, he cannot advance beyond level one. After spending five years working as a guide on the lower floors of a tower, Kigyu discovers that he possesses the ability to connect with powerful entities known as Egos. This unexpected discovery gives him a different way to strengthen himself and explore the dangerous gates that have transformed his world.

The series provides an interesting alternative to Solo Leveling because its protagonist must overcome a limitation that initially appears impossible to escape. Rather than relying on conventional leveling alone, Kigyu develops his abilities by discovering how his unusual power works and using it to his advantage. The result combines monster encounters, supernatural combat, and progression mechanics with a central mystery about what it truly means to be powerful in a world obsessed with rankings.

My Very Own Tower Strategy Guide (2024)

Original Story By goodluck, Adapted By Sado. Of Redice Studio And Illustrated By X-NAME

Best Apocalypse Manhwa like Solo Leveling My Very Own Tower Strategy Guide

Mixing a broken leveling system unique to its protagonist like Solo Leveling and the particularly saturated tower apocalypse subgenre, My Very Own Tower Strategy Guide could have easily risked becoming slop upon its release. However, its self-awareness and personal main character, Lee Hoyeong, shine through in this particular manhwa. Rather than his gift awakening following a harrowing incident like Jinwoo's Double Dungeon moment, though, Hoyeong is given advance warning for the impending apocalypse, taking the chance to train up to the second it arrives, with towers predictably emerging around the world.

Hoyeong's journey starts like any other, but it's in how he carries himself that the series sets itself apart. The tower Hoyeong ascends, alongside a group of fellow survivors, enables their powers similarly to a typical action RPG with the usual blue game UI screens found in the genre. But the series also mixes in death games intended to pit its survivors against each other like in Tower of God, but with brutal consequences. Hoyeong, though, has a secret weapon: before everything happened, he spared the life of an innocent goblin, who gave him a medicine, unlocking his own OP ability: the Strategy Guide for Survival.

Hoyeong is thus given enemy weakness and progression hints at the price known as the Weight of Knowledge, seemingly the ultimate nerf which subtracts after any EXP gains he gets. The upside, though? It seems to be a glitch in the system, as Hoyeong retains the attribute and skill points, allowing him to rapidly outpace the growth of others around him. The result is a surprisingly darkly comedic take, with Hoyeong often winning over allies with immense displays of strength. But don't get attached: characters can die just as gruesomely, either at the mercy of the tower's games, or once other survivors show their true colors.

Mosquito Wars (2017)

Written And Illustrated By JH

Best Apocalyptic Manhwa Mosquito Wars

Coming from the creator of all-timers like The Horizon and The Boxer, Mosquito Wars launched between the runs of these two legends as a bizarre apocalyptic tale. Pitting humanity's last 5,000 survivors against the might of the world's true ultimate apex predator 100 years into their new reign, they must find the weakness of their most underestimated enemy, the mosquito.

Mosquitoes in this manhwa have evolved far past their current state, resembling quasi-humanoid beasts with twisted eyes straight out of a psychological horror anime. Featuring JH's heavily stylized art, this series boasts immense world-building, but don't get attached. It features an endearing cast of characters who, true to apocalyptic tales, are too tragically likable to possibly survive.

Zombie X Slasher (2023)

Written By NARACK & Illustrated By Hong Jun Ki

Best Horror Manhwa Zombie X Slasher Cheolsu in action

In this apocalyptic manhwa, the tangible consequences of a zombie outbreak cause, among other things, a housing crisis with massive inflation. Suppose that topic isn't enough to hit home. In that case, Zombie X Slasher stars a protagonist, Kim Cheolsu, who wishes to buy a home of his own, and, thanks to a Busan city initiative, he can amass a fortune in exchange for a mountain of zombie corpses. Nearly eight thousand zombies later, Cheolsu emerges with a glimpse at freedom, only for the real story to begin.

Cheolsu's stint as a one-man zombie cleanup mercenary leaves him with some new enemies, though, as he quickly learns, he's afflicted with the same condition. He resists zombification through sheer force of will in the face of being subdued by the authorities, a testament to his enormous willpower, and an interesting series hook. In his darkest hour, he is recruited by other "slashers," a zombie-themed fighting force similar to the hunters in other apocalyptic manhwa like Solo Leveling, in a violent, edgy, glorious action-horror romp which ran a satisfying-yet-concise 92 chapters.

The World After The Fall (2022)

Written By singNsong & Illustrated By Undead Gamja

Jaehwan from The World After the Fall looking angry holding a sword

From the same author as Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, The World After the Fall also features a plot that grows just as complex and vibrant as the world-building that fans of Solo Leveling will be able to appreciate.

The manhwa is set in a post-apocalyptic setting where, instead of gates like Solo Leveling, Towers have begun to appear on Earth. The magic beasts within are poised to annihilate humanity, and only a select few dubbed Tower Walkers can fight them.

To make things interesting, the Tower Walkers each possess a stone that allows them to go back in time to when the Towers appeared and start over with the knowledge they currently have. Only one among them, the story's protagonist, Jaehwan, refuses to regress and continues to climb the tower, fighting for the current timeline.

Level Up With The Gods (2022)

Based On The novels By Black Ajin & Illustrated By Ohyeon

Kim Yuwon in the manhwa Level Up with the Gods dominates a chimera in the tutorial.

With ancient evils threatening to destroy the world, Kim Yuwon, with the help of his comrades, decides to climb the tower once more with the hopes of becoming stronger to overpower his enemies. Yuwon’s knowledge helps him level up, along with his understanding of how the tower operates, including its floor managers.

His lone-wolf personality is similar to Jinwoo, yet he allows himself to cautiously guide Zeus’ son. Lovers of mythology will delight in the God of Olympus characters and their treacherous games spread throughout the tower, as well as the world of Murim, as the tower possesses different dimensions within its structure.
