Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
Though a fifth mainline installment is apparently confirmed and in development and From the World of John Wick: Caine recently began filming, the John Wick franchise hasn’t sustained its incredible momentum following John Wick: Chapter 4. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina was released only last year, of course, but it still feels like it’s been quite a while since Keanu Reeves’ relentless hitman protagonist was as big a figure in the popular culture zeitgeist as he was a few years ago.
John Wick: Chapter 4 would be as decent a spot as any to have ended the series, seeing as John Wick is now allegedly dead. It’s unknown if John Wick 5 will go ahead and say that his death was faked or indulge in Ballerina’s prequel era to reflect on an era where he was once alive, but fans of the character and the Continental’s rich mythology won’t have to wait for another movie in order to experience a new John Wick adventure, which has enormous shoes to fill.
Saber announced its AAA John Wick game at the February 2026 PlayStation State of Play showcase. No actual gameplay was revealed, which doesn’t necessarily bode well for it, but fans have understandably high expectations after seeing what was presented to them in its reveal trailer.
For instance, Reddit users like spikedmace and durinsbane47 are equating the game’s proposed action to Sifu’s intricate and gratifying combat, though fans are skeptical about this John Wick game’s combat being as fluid and rewarding. As srhdt writes, “We saw basically no gameplay. The in-game stuff looked like scripted finishers so hard to tell how it will play or feel.”
Similarly, user TJ_McWeaksauce states, “The trailer showed us almost nothing except you can fight like John Wick, which is the bare minimum expectation for a John Wick game.” Therefore, it all boils down to what gameplay will truly be like; if it turns out to look or play nothing like how combat looks in this John Wick game’s cinematic trailer, fans will have every right to be upset.
Even more daunting than satisfying fans of action games is the notion that this John Wick game has the weight of a massive popular franchise crushing it. Thankfully, it’ll at least be telling an original story that presumably takes place before the events of the movies and before he retired. Consequently, user Nogarda will likely be pleased with that choice: “I don’t need the movies as a game, years after they came out."
Fans agree that it is essentially going to need to be on the same level as the movies to succeed, similar to what 007 First Light achieved for the James Bond IP, and especially with a gulf between movies of its own that it needed to fulfill. 007 First Light turned out to be a fantastic game, though, and it’ll be interesting if Saber can hit its own home run with John Wick.
