Tammy Slaton of 1000-lb Sisters has become more independent since losing weight, but her refusal to learn to drive threatens to hold her back from reaching her potential. On top of keeping the 38-year-old from being truly independent, it also threatened to derail her relationship with her brother, 44-year-old Chris Combs. Tammy and Chris have always had a great relationship, but Chris is ready for Tammy to lean on him less now that she can take care of herself.
Tammy weighed 725 pounds at her heaviest, and, before she had bariatric surgery, she needed lots of help with her day-to-day life. Since losing an incredible 500 pounds, the 1000-lb Sisters season 6 star has come into her own as an independent woman. Having her mobility back has been a game-changer for Tammy, but her refusal to learn to drive may keep her from achieving real independence. Tammy's inability to drive could threaten her weight-loss journey and her relationship with Chris.
Driving Has Always Been An Issue For Tammy
She Was Too Big To Drive
Before Tammy's bariatric surgery, the 1000-lb Sisters star had limited mobility. She couldn't walk or stand up for more than a few seconds and needed help with every aspect of her daily life. Leaving the house was a major ordeal that required her wheelchair, a ramp, an oxygen tank, and a specialty van. Tammy couldn't fit in a regular car seat, so the center seat of the van was ripped out so she could sit on the floor. She obviously couldn't drive herself, so she always needed someone to drive her.
Tammy Still Relies On Chris
He's Starting To Resent It
Since losing 500 pounds, Tammy easily fits into a regular car seat and could use a regular seat belt without an extension. Though the 1000-lb Sisters season 6 star can now easily drive herself, she refuses to learn to drive, so she relies on her brother, Chris, to drive her everywhere. Though Chris doesn't mind helping his family, he works six days a week and has his wife and family to think about. He doesn't have time to drive Tammy around anywhere, but she refuses to learn to drive, and it's starting to grate on his nerves.
Why Tammy Refuses To Learn To Drive
The Last Vestige Of Her Old Life
Tammy's entire adult life was marked by the fact that she needed everyone's help all the time. Though it's great that the 1000-lb Sisters star lost weight and regained her independence, the growing pains are real. Tammy has to learn how to take care of herself, which she has never had to do before. Tammy has made many major changes over the years, like living on her own for the first time, so learning to drive is another challenge she'll have to overcome.
