10 Strongest Marvel Characters Spider-Man Has Beat In A Fight

2 hours ago 8

Spider-Man has been Marvel’s poster-boy for heroism for the longest and remains one of the franchise’s most iconic heroes. Despite that, there are still some misconceptions that surround the character. While he may seem like a mere street-level hero, the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” outside of saving civilians and trading quips with low-rent mobsters, Spider-Man routinely punches above his weight class.

Furthermore, Spider-Man has taken on some of Marvel’s heavy hitters and won thanks to his blend of physical power, tactical brilliance, and superhuman reflexes. With enhanced agility, a precognitive spider-sense, and genius-level intellect, he is terrifying when he stops holding back. At full strength, Spider-Man can even stand his ground against the Hulk.

Over his six-decade comic book history, Spider-Man has built a stacked combat record full of unbelievable upsets. This article spotlights 10 of the most powerful characters Spider-Man has defeated. From dismantling entire superhero teams to outsmarting cosmic threats and beating opponents who routinely tear through walls like they're paper, Spider-Man has displayed feats far beyond the label of “street-level”.

10 Rhino

Among all of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, Rhino is one of the strongest and most physically capable. Rhino (Aleksei Sytsevich) possesses near-impenetrable armor and superhuman strength capable of tearing through concrete bunkers. In his specialized suit, he is capable of lifting 100 tons, well above what Spider-Man can.

However, Spider-Man has defeated him on several occasions because of his cleverness, superior speed, and agility. In The Amazing Spider-Man #43, Spider-Man defeated Rhino using special webbing designed to corrode Rhino’s suit. This Webbing damaged Rhino’s suit and made him vulnerable to attack.

9 Wolverine

Wolverine is no stranger to taking on heavy hitters, having fought the Hulk on occasion. His adamantium skeleton, lethal razor-sharp claws, and immense combat experience make him a terrifying opponent. However, in their first battle, shown in Spider-Man vs Wolverine #1, Spider-Man proved that Wolverine is no match for his superior strength and speed.

When Spider-Man and Wolverine clash in Berlin, Spider-Man was able to dodge all of Wolverine’s lethal strikes, ultimately pinning Logan down and using superior speed and leverage to subdue him physically. Spider-Man grabbed his neck, ready to snap it, but held back due to his rigid moral code.

8 Titania

Titania is a villain strong enough to go toe-to-toe with She-Hulk; however, Spider-Man scored a decisive victory against her in Secret Wars #8 (1984). Mary MacPherran was a small, frail woman until Doctor Doom used alien technology on Battleworld to give her immense physical strength and durability, making her an intimidating, super-strong enforcer known as Titania.

Titania had built a reputation for overpowering Earth’s strongest heroes, but when she faced Spider-Man, his unmatched speed and combat experience proved too much for her. She had the advantage in raw physical power, but because she had only just received her powers, she was too inexperienced to defeat Spider-Man, who beat her in an epic battle.

7 Red Goblin

The horrific amalgamation of Spider-Man’s two greatest rivalries is what Peter had to face in The Amazing Spider-Man #800 (2018), when Norman Osborn bonded with the murderous Carnage symbiote to become the Red Goblin. Individually, Carnage and the Green Goblins are formidable enemies for Spider-Man, but together they are pure nightmare fuel.

The Red Goblin is an unkillable nightmare with a hybrid power set. He has Norman’s ruthless strategic intellect and Goblin tech, combined with Carnage’s shapeshifting lethality and immunity to fire and sound. Spider-Man was completely outmatched in physical combat against the Red Goblin, even after re-bonding with the Venom symbiote and teaming up with his closest allies.

When beating the Red Goblin in a direct physical confrontation proved hopeless, he pivoted to psychological warfare. He weaponized Norman’s biggest weakness against him, his ego. Playing on Norman’s ego, he got the Red Goblin to discard the Carnage symbiote, leaving him vulnerable to attack.

6 Morlun

In The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #35, Spider-Man faced Morlun, one of the most terrifying villains of his career. A cosmic vampire, Morlun travels the multiverse hunting spider-totems and draining their life force. He has killed many Spider-Men from different dimensions and proved a monster in hand-to-hand combat, overpowering Peter with frightening strength and an insatiable hunger for spider-powered blood.

In their brutal first encounters, Morlun shrugged off Spider-Man’s strongest blows and hurt him so badly that his bones shattered. He drove Peter across New York City in a relentless chase, leaving him truly terrified for his life. With no help from allies, Spider-Man had to devise a desperate, suicidal way to defeat the villain.

Spider-Man injected himself with a lethal dose of radiation, deliberately poisoning his own bloodstream at a nuclear plant. When Morlun sank his teeth into him to absorb Spider-Man’s vital energy, the heavily irradiated blood acted like a burning toxin to his vampiric system. It instantly brought the seemingly invincible hunter to his knees.

5 Juggernaut

The Juggernaut is a terrifying force of nature, thanks to the superhuman strength and durability he gets from the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. With the Gem, Juggernaut can lift over 100 tons and is basically immovable. He is usually an X-Men villain, but there are times when he comes to Manhattan, making him a problem for Spider-Man to deal with.

One such occasion arises in The Amazing Spider-Man #229, where Spider-Man had to think outside the box to stop Juggernaut’s rampage in the city. He defeats him by blinding him and luring him into a pool of wet cement, taking away his momentum and rendering his powers ineffective. This fight is an exemplary showcase of Spider-Man’s ingenuity in a fight.

4 Hulk

In The Amazing Spider-Man #328, Spider-Man found himself up against an incredible foe, the Hulk. Under regular circumstances, the Hulk is well above Spider-Man’s weight class; trading blows with the Hulk is a guaranteed hospital trip at best and a death sentence at worst. However, this fight took place under particular circumstances that gave Spider-Man the advantage.

In the comic, Spider-Man was temporarily imbued with the Uni-Power, an ancient cosmic energy source that transformed him into Captain Universe. When a Grey Hulk (Joe Fixit) was rampaging through New York, Spider-Man stepped in to stop him, landing an uppercut that launched the behemoth into outer space. Spider-Man essentially took the Hulk out of the fight with one hit.

3 Colossus

X-Men's Colossus stands in front of a fiery background

Colossus is one of the X-Men’s most physically imposing members. Colossus (Piotr “Peter” Rasputin) is a mutant who can transform his entire body into tissue-like organic steel. In this armored form, Colossus gains superhuman strength that lets him lift over 100 tons, near-invincibility against extreme temperatures and heavy artillery, and stamina that allows him to battle for days without fatigue.

Despite his overwhelming presence, Colossus is often depicted as a gentle giant who is usually on Spider-Man’s side. However, during the Avengers vs X-Men storyline, Colossus became a terrifying threat after being imbued with a portion of the Phoenix Force. In Avengers vs X-Men #9, a severely beaten Spider-Man defeated Colossus by turning him and Magik against each other.

This feat is a testament to Spider-Man’s intelligence. With a few words, he was able to turn the two siblings, Colossus and Magik, securing victory. Even a Phoenix-powered Colossus stood no match against Spider-Man’s cunning. Against opponents far above him in strength, Spider-Man’s intellect ensures that he is not to be underestimated.

2 Fantastic Four

Spider-Man and Marvel’s first family famously came to blows in The Amazing Spider-Man #1. When Spider-Man tries to join the Fantastic Four, he ends up fighting and embarrassing the entire team. Though the Fantastic Four are all powerhouses individually, and together they’ve taken on and defeated powerful villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus, their arrogance was their own undoing.

Using his ingenuity and quick wit, Spider-Man outsmarted and defeated each member of the Fantastic Four by exploiting their tendency to underestimate opponents. Peter dodged every attack, dismantled their defenses, and left the team flustered and unable to regroup. The fight ends when Mr Fantastic finally confronts Peter about why he came.

This moment remains a landmark in Marvel Comics history, proving that Spider-Man’s rare mix of speed, intellect, and instincts could throw even Earth’s greatest team into complete disarray. The initial rivalry later became a deep family bond, with Spider-Man becoming a frequent ally, an honorary member of the team, and a brother figure to the Human Torch.

1 Firelord

Herald Of Galactus Firelord

Firelord (Pyreus Kril) is one of Galactus’s most powerful Heralds, wielding the Power Cosmic, which lets him fly through space, fire cosmic beams, and manipulate energy and matter. He is no slouch by any means, yet Spider-Man was able to defeat him in Spider-Man #269, after Firelord turned a minor misunderstanding into a city-wide rampage on arriving on Earth.

Spider-Man, realizing that retreating would mean putting innocent lives in danger, stood his ground against Firelord. He employed several clever tactics to slow Firelord down, including dousing him in the river and trapping him in the subway. When all else fails, Spider-Man stops pulling his punches; he leaps onto Firelord and delivers an unrelenting barrage of punches that overwhelm him.

Relying on only his pure strength and speed, Spider-Man was able to take down a cosmic-level threat, keeping him down until the Avengers arrived to find a traumatized, hyperventilating Peter standing over Firelord’s bloody, unconscious body. This is a monumental example of what Peter Parker is capable of when pushed to his absolute limits and not pulling his punches.
