Tony Stark's Iron Man is constantly updating his suit to counter a huge array of threats, always chasing the bleeding edge of tech. However, some of his most creative and impressive suits leave his traditional design behind, experimenting with what the 'Iron Man' name can even mean.
Here are the top ten suits introduced since 2000 that did something unique with Iron Man's armor, whether they introduced a new design, a new ability or a new theme to his story.
For this list, we're only counting suits that appeared in full stories - otherwise, the list would be packed with awesome one-off comic covers - see some of the examples below.
10 Iron Man II's Nano Particle Armor
Introduced in 2008's Iron Man: The End #1 by David Michelinie, Bob Layton & Bernard Chang
In Iron Man: The End, Tony Stark officially retires as Iron Man, passing on the suit to protégé Nick Travis. Tony Stark's story is designed never to end, but by imagining his final chapter, Marvel created the possibility for a suit that finally fulfills his life's mission.
The tiny machines that make up the armor can break apart and absorb any device they come into contact with. With this suit, Tony Stark finally accomplished his dream: creating a weapon that destroys weapons.
9 The Superior Iron Man's Endo-Sym Armor
Introduced in 2014's Superior Iron Man #1 by Tom Taylor and Yıldıray Çınar
After having his morality inverted as part of the AXIS event, Tony became the Superior Iron Man. This new, white and blue look was creative for several reasons, not least because it's one of the only looks where Tony's face is visible as the default.
The suit is constructed using a braindead symbiote, giving it a liquid form that Tony can summon and harden via thought. It's also designed to emit and control the Extremis virus, allowing Tony to manipulate the biology of those around him. This is the armor designed and used by a totally self-serving Iron Man.
8 Iron Man's Mysterium Armor
Introduced in 2024's Invincible Iron Man #15 by Gerry Duggan and Creees Lee
While this recent armor looks like a traditional Iron Man suit, it did something new by venturing into the realm of magic. Discovered by the X-Men, Mysterium is a unique metal mined from outside time and space.
Mysterium is incredibly hardy and boasts unusual Immunities. It has 'anti-magic' properties that stop spells being able to affect it, and can't be detected by Spider-Man's spider-sense.
Initially described as less durable than adamantium, that fact was later retconned, and while wearing the Mysterium suit, Iron Man was able to crush adamantium with his hands.
7 Tony Stark's Iron Shogun
Introduced in 2023's I Am... Iron Man #3 by Murewa Ayodele and Adedotun Akande
Captured by the supervillain Mojo, Tony is forced into playacting the role of the Iron Shogun, complete with epic armor and blazing energy swords. This costume was tied to a story about Tony's love for his mother, and his desire to act as a knight in shining armor and 'save' her, even after her death.
The suit appears here mostly for its creative visual design. It's hard to find a reason that Iron Man would choose to use swords when he has so many others options available to him, but I Am... Iron Man found one.
6 The Iron Goblin
Debuted in 2015's Spider Island #2 by Christos N. Gage and Paco Diaz
In the alt-universe Spider Island, various Avengers are forced to use the tech of Spider-Man's villains. Tony gets the worst deal after being exposed to the Green Goblin's goblin formula, gaining immense strength at the cost of quickly eroding sanity.
To fight back against the villains swarming New York, Tony used a cache of Norman Osborn's tech to create the Iron Goblin suit - a deadly weapon loaded with explosives and blades, but also a warning to his fellow heroes that he could lose control at any moment.
Ultimately, Tony's better self won out, and he sacrificed himself before the serum could drive him to do anything unforgivable. Since Green Goblin is a Spidey villain, fans never expected to see the character mashed up with Iron Man, but it was a long time coming, given that during the Dark Reign era, Norman Osborn stole Iron Man's armor to rebrand himself as the Iron Patriot.
5 Ultimate Tony Stark's Iron Man Six
Debuted in 2006's Ultimates 2 #12 by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch
When the villainous Liberators invaded America, the Iron Man of Earth-1610 fled the planet. However, that wasn't because he was scared - it's because he wanted to activate his secret weapon, the Iron Man Six battle platform.
The Ultimate Universe was always intended for stories that couldn't be told in the mainstream, and Iron Man adapting his suit into a gigantic weapon of mass destruction was one such concept.
4 Iron Lad's Immortus Engine Suit
Introduced in 2023's Ultimate Invasion #2 by Jonathan Hickman and Bryan Hitch
In the new Ultimate Universe launched in the 2020s, Tony Stark is a teenager when his father uncovers the existence of a cabal of villains controlling the planet. Tony tries to fight back as Iron Lad, only to be killed by the Hulk.
Thankfully, the heroic Doctor Doom is able to merge Tony's armor with an 'Immortus Engine' - a time travel device which they were hoping to use to change the world.
The Immortus Engine stops Tony's biological processes, trapping him at the very moment before his death and allowing him to fight on. The suit has several other capabilities - the weirdest of which is that Tony can create chronal duplicates of himself to be in multiple places at once.
It's been teased that Tony will eventually become this universe's answer to Kang the Conqueror, as his control over time gradually corrupts him.
3 Iron Man 2099's Hyperpulse Mark IX
Introduced in 2012's Iron Man: Armored Adventures S2E18 by Kevin Burke and Chris Wyatt
Moving away from comics, animated series Iron Man: Armored Adventures deserves praise for an awesome design all its own. In one episode, Tony is contacted by Andros Stark - his descendant from 2099 (originally a comic character who looks considerably different.)
With decades of advanced tech, Andros has some extra powers, the most impressive of which is super-speed, visually complemented by the crackling red energy that dances around the suit.
The Hyperpulse armor can also teleport and travel through time, while having stronger versions of Iron Man's traditional weaponry. However, it's the futuristic style that landed it a place on our list.
2 The Iron God
Introduced in 2021's Iron Man #14 by Christopher Cantwell, CAFU and Ángel Unzueta
In order to stop the villainous Korvac stealing the powers of Galactus, Tony Stark took them for himself, becoming the Iron God. This suit is constructed entirely from the Power Cosmic, and represents Tony's arrogance getting the best of him.
The Iron God is a dark reflection of Iron Man - Tony's worst elements engulfing him. As the Iron God, Tony stood as tall as a skyscraper and possessed godlike abilities, including the power to grant everyone in New York his own genius-level intellect (a move that Reed Richards noted decreased his own IQ by several points.)
1 Ultimate Tony Stark's Bacterial Bio-Armor
Introduced in 2005's Ultimate Iron Man #1 by Orson Scott Card and Andy Kubert
In 2005, Marvel's original Ultimate Universe decided to reinvent Tony Stark as a true superhuman. While Tony is in the womb, a rare virus turns his entire nervous system into neural tissue, essentially making his entire body a giant brain.
This fact leaves him incredibly vulnerable, and so Tony's father designs a bacterial 'bio-armor.' While this blue substance can be sprayed onto Tony's body like paint, it hardens on impact, protecting him from harm, and consumes any metal on contact.
This is the most unique armor Marvel has ever given Tony Stark - so weird that Marvel later retconned this story from canon, 'revealing' it as a Japanese TV show that took a lot of liberties with Tony's life story.
Let us know in the comments below what other Iron Man suits introduced since 2000 did something totally unique, and what you think of our ranking.
