With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth coming to PC on January 23, 2025, a whole new audience can experience the 2024 hit - and with any PC release will come a vast array of mods. For the first year of its release, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has remained exclusively on PlayStation 5, making PC players wait an extended period of time. The wait will almost certainly be worth it, considering that mods will definitely come into play upon the release of Rebirth.

When Final Fantasy VII Remake released on PC, fans were quick to create a vast variety of fun and technical mods that made the game more enjoyable. In general, mods typically range from the useful - fixing bugs or improving lighting - to the fun, like letting players use alternate costumes. When it comes to mods, there's also the downright bizarre, with some of the most viral typically adding in characters from other franchises - Thomas the Tank Engine mods are firm favorite.

10 Saved Materia Loadout Mod

A Handy Mod To Save Lots Of Effort

In Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, equippable weapons and accessories are known to have a few slots to add materia to a character's abilities and skillset. However, one known fact about the materia loadout is that players cannot pre-save a loadout if they want to make changes depending on circumstances. For example, when players are forced to switch between a cast of characters to pursue a part of the story, players may have to swap out materia from their usual party members to their new ones.

I Love The "Worst" Part Of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been met with universal acclaim, but some players point out one major flaw with it. However, that flaw doesn't bother me.

A mod that can save materia loadouts, however, would be a game-changer. This would allow players to have pre-made loadouts that they can just swap in and out of for certain battle sequences or storyline purposes. This would make materia customization far more convenient and less time-consuming. Not to mention, whenever players have to include certain party members, a customized loadout makes it easier to transition back into the player's picks for their original party.

9 Ever Crisis Costume Mod

A Perfect Costume Change

For those who don't know, Ever Crisis is a spinoff mobile game that takes place throughout the entirety of Final Fantasy 7. It's a compilation of sorts, gathering stories from the main game and its several spinoffs. It even offers a gamemode that takes place prior to the events of Final Fantasy 7, covering the past of Sephiroth and three new characters.

One fun aspect of Ever Crisis is its costume design for its characters, which are gathered from lootboxes. While the story is definitely the selling point, the costumes add to the charm of the game. A mod designed to allow players to customize their party members with these costumes would be fun, allowing players the creativity they may so desire while playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It's not a necessity per se, and it definitely doesn't improve any forms of gameplay, but it would undoubtedly add an exciting element to the presentation of characters.

8 Playable Zack or Sephiroth Mod

The Perfect Replacements

Zack and Sephiroth are core characters that have garnered love in the Final Fantasy community for years. The ability to play as Zack or Sephiroth in place of Cloud outside of their designated times would be a fun mod to include in the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This is because, while Cloud is a character that all Final Fantasy 7 fans love and appreciate, there's something charming about the first-class soldiers. Ever since the release of Crisis Core in 2008, fans of Final Fantasy 7 have grown to love Zack Fair.

Meanwhile, Sephiroth has been gaining steady development for years now. Though it doesn't mean that they have to have their own abilities—though it would be rather cool—just being able to play as them throughout the game would provide a breath of fresh air. This mod would just appease fans who prefer playing as Zack or Sephiroth, and even though it doesn't make sense storywise, their character appearances would more or less just serve as placements for Cloud.

7 Lighting Adjustment Mod

A Necessary Fix

It's a common complaint in the Final Fantasy community that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has some questionable lighting. This lighting, such as being too bright in Costa del Sol, leads to players experiencing a little too much of the white color on the screen. This poses an issue for players who can't really see much apart from the white color, making the experience in Costa del Sol a bit lackluster.

Not to mention, some of the lighting in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has proven to be unflattering to not only the locations of the game but it also makes the characters look a tad bit lifeless. It's almost uncanny. This isn't to say though that the lighting doesn't create beautiful cinematic moments, but it's grown to be an overall technical issue with the game.

6 Complete Party In Battle Mod

A Wider Cast Of Characters

A common complaint with RPGs and JRPGs in general is that players get a wide cast of characters to select from to form a party, but they can only pick three other party members. Now, while it's understandable why there's a limit on party members—making the game too easy, for example—it still is a bummer to only be able to allow three on the field at a time, including the party leader who players can never seem to swap out.

The cast of characters in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is so diverse in their abilities that it's hard to pick only three other party members. This leads to players missing out on a lot of cool abilities and synergies. Square Enix tries to appease the playerbase by including other party members but only on the sidelines, which is much different than being able to control them. A mod fixing this and allowing all party members to be controlled on the battlefield would lead to such a fun experience, though it may be a technical impossibility.

5 Party Leader Swap Mod

More Experiences

Another interesting creation for modders to consider for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a party leader swap mod. Inside of battle, players are allowed to control any of their party members, which is great because every character is diverse in fighting style. But as soon as the battle ends, even if players are playing as Tifa in battle, they are immediately switched back to Cloud as party leader for field exploration, which is most of the game.

FF7 Rebirth skipped over Rocket Town and Cid’s background story. But, FF7R Part 3 can get the ball rolling by heading there first.

Being able to swap out the party leader would just make the experience a bit more fun, especially since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has such a fun cast of characters. Players already got a taste of Yuffie in Episode INTERmission, and there are points in the game where players are forced to swap to a different character, but these experiences alone just show how fun playing another character could be.

4 Classic Soundtrack Mod

A Return To Form

One aspect of the original Final Fantasy 7 game that every fan loved was the original soundtrack. Like most Final Fantasy soundtracks of the PlayStation era, the themes were filled with synthesized instruments. This defined the era of Final Fantasy music before Square Enix started using more orchestrated-sounding music, which is sometimes softer to the ear.

Even though the soundtrack of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is great in all aspects, the original soundtrack of Final Fantasy 7 set a specific tone, and it is a game that is beloved for its soundtrack. A mod that replaces the current Rebirth soundtrack with the original would be a fun mod to implement, as this would bring back the old feelings of the classic game.

3 FFVII Remake Costume Mod

More Choices For Clothing

Back during the Don Corneo chapter of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Tifa, Aerith, and Cloud all received special outfits. More specifically, they received three special dresses, and depending on certain decisions made in the game, one dress would be chosen for the Don Corneo chapter. Final Fantasy 7 Remake hit it out of the ballpark with these dresses, which were not only stunning but also very fitting for the three protagonists.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a mod that allowed players to keep certain dresses on Aerith, Tifa, and even Cloud. This mod could easily be used in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, allowing players to dress their characters in certain outfits that they liked from the previous game. It definitely keeps the gameplay more exciting, and who doesn't love Aerith and Tifa in their beautifully designed and iconic dresses?

2 Additional Materia Slots Mod

More Space For Magic

Materia are useful, equippable magical abilities that help players in battle. It is crystallized mako energy that allows players to cast certain spells or use certain abilities. The most useful item in the game, there are simply not enough materia slots in equippable armor and weapons in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Of course, this adds to the challenge of the game itself, but it also prevents users from creating truly powerful characters.

Yuffie’s age in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is known, but not often mentioned. This is exactly how old the ninja is during the events of the PS5 game.

By creating a mod that allows for additional materia slots in weapons and armor, players will be able to customize their characters even more in terms of power and strength. This can lead to truly deadly combos and a more diverse battle strategy instead of relying on the same four-to-six materia. Plus, having to pick and choose between incredibly useful materia is just plain frustrating.

1 More Aggressive & Challenging Enemies Mod

Hard Mode, Activated

Another common want in video games nowadays is a higher difficulty and more of a challenge. This is especially true in JRPGs, since plenty of times players can grind or have impressive setups for their party. In Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, enemies tend to be on the less challenging side, especially after a certain point.

One interesting mod would be to implement a more aggressive enemy system that makes the enemies in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth more challenging. Plenty of players love a good challenge, and with modern battle customization, there could eventually be pretty interesting and impressive results, leading to more chaos on the battlefield and more fun in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
