HBO Max has built quite the extensive library, with a great many shows that push boundaries and deliver some of the most talked-about scenes in modern television. Most of the platform’s shows are great and can become quite addictive due to their intense content—content that is not incredibly ideal for children. From action to fantasy and even teen drama, some of HBO MAX’s shows are simply far too intense for kids to witness.

Quality shows like the incredibly explicit and blood-drenched series True Blood, and the teen drama Euphoria, which dives headfirst into explicit sexuality, addiction, and trauma, are just two series on the beloved HBO MAX platform that are far too intense for younger viewers. Compiled on this list are series that may be quite masterful and widely popular, but stand as way too intense and graphic of a viewing experience for any children.

10 'Primal' (2019–2022)

Primal may be an animated series, but it is truly one of the most brutal shows to ever exist. Created by Genndy Tartakovsky and set in a fantastical prehistoric world, the show follows the caveman Spear and his unlikely friendship with a Tyrannosaurus rex called Fang after they both suffer tragic losses.

Primal is an amazing animated series that depicts quite a few heartfelt moments, but in between those lies a savagery that would haunt any adult viewer, let alone a younger one. It’s an incredibly engaging story featuring masterful animation that depicts raw survival themes without any dialogue. Primal’s violence is stylized but quite realistic in impact; every scene is a heart-racing, bloody affair that can honestly be quite upsetting. The series is indeed unique and stands as a very entertaining watch, but the animated show is definitely not for little ones to see.

9 'His Dark Materials' (2019–2022)

This incredible fantasy masterfully explores existential dread, religious corruption, and child experimentation, all the while being an incredible work of fiction in both visuals and story. His Dark Materials, a series based on Philip Pullman’s novels, centers on the young Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) who sets out on a perilous journey after children—including her best friend—begin to disappear.

His Dark Materials is an underrated fantasy series that is honestly one of the best. Beneath its enchanting exterior lies a philosophical weight that makes the series undeniably much too intense for children. Not only does His Dark Materials have some rather traumatic scenes of child endangerment, but its tone is also pretty dark and foreboding. The show may be extremely compelling, with amazing word-building and a fantastical story of parallel worlds and determined children, but its themes and tone push it right into the mature watcher’s category.

8 'The Last of Us' (2023–Present)

The Last of Us delivers not only tons of graphic intensity but also a lot of emotional devastation that can be quite crippling. The fantastic post-apocalyptic drama, based on the acclaimed video game, is set 20 years after a fungal pandemic has decimated civilization, and follows hardened survivor, Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), and his new charge, Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl who may hold the answers humanity longs for.

The Last of Us wastes absolutely no time in throwing its viewers right into a world of violence. The show is filled with emotional trauma that is tough for any viewer, no matter the age. The Last of Us is definitely not for the faint of heart, with its grief-filled and dread-drenched tone and characters being brutally killed by both monsters and men. The series is an incredibly entertaining one that’s perfect for those enticed by zombie horror and an intriguing story, but it should absolutely be left to adults only.

7 'True Blood' (2008–2014)

This iconic vampire series is drenched in blood, sex, and many other unapologetic adult themes. True Blood is a supernatural drama set in small-town Louisiana, and focuses on the telepathic waitress in Bon Temps, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), and her 'romance with 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

While there are quite a great many fun-loving vampire shows made for younger audiences, True Blood is definitely not one of them. The series is an icon in and of itself, but it sits firmly in the adult category for its explicit sex scenes, strong language, and graphic violence. True Blood wields a sensuality and darkness so intense that it makes it an epic to watch for audiences, of course, only for those of the appropriate age.

6 'Warrior' (2019–Present)

Warrior is a historical drama that features gritty crime storytelling and bone-crunching fight choreography that leaves no room for little eyes. The material-arts crime series follows the Chinese immigrant and kung fu prodigy Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), who arrives in America in search of his sister and finds himself entangled in the conflict of rival tongs.

Warrior is quite brutal, with a harsh realism in not only fight choreography but also brutal themes. The series is politically charged, extremely violent, and stands as one of HBO's most intense shows. Every moment is a uniquely exhilarating experience, and with an incredibly well-crafted story that genuinely captivates its audiences. Warriors stands as a truly great watch for people old enough to watch it, but with its insanely realistic fight scenes and graphic sexual content, nudity, and explicit language, it couldn’t be played anywhere near kids.

5 'Harley Quinn' (2019–Present)

This brightly colored animated series is an all-around chaotic good time, but audiences should never be fooled, for the show is wildly inappropriately intense for children. Harley Quinn centers on the clown villainess, Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco), newly split from the Joker and on a mission to strike out on her own life of crime in Gotham City.

Harley Quinn takes some of the best DC characters and transforms them with graphic violence, sharp satire, and quality explicit humor. It's far from the usual DC shows where heroes with clean-cut morals save the day, as the animated series leans towards the more outrageous and hilariously absurd. From sexual humor and gory scenes featuring severed limbs to downright obscene language, Harley Quinn delivers masterful entertainment just as good as any R-rated live-action series, cementing its place on this list of series that are just too much for kids.

4 'Chernobyl' (2019)

Chernobyl is in no way fantasy horror, but the haunting and psychologically disturbing series definitely feels like it. The five-part historical miniseries showcases the aftermath of the 1986 Soviet nuclear disaster, focusing on the officials and scientists affected by the reactor’s explosion.

Chernobyl is incredibly raw, wielding a realism that makes it extremely unsuitable for young viewers. The horror within the series is far from fictional and can be quite overwhelming even for most adult audiences. Chernobyl is quite frequently hailed for its authenticity, which makes it all the more unsettling as it displays the grisly effects of radiation sickness, including bodily disfigurement as victims succumb to exposure. The series is indeed an incredible watch, but its graphic medical scenes and pervasive sense of horror can actually be rather traumatizing for children.

3 'Euphoria' (2019–2025)

This series may focus on teens and their drama, but with its headfirst dive into topics of sexuality, addiction, and trauma, the show is anything but truly kid-friendly. Euphoria is a gritty teen drama that centers around a group of high school students navigating love, trauma, and identity.

Euphoria is extremely real in its drama, depicting youth in its rawest and often quite unsettling form. The series is bold and emotional, delivering something that, although teenage-centric, is actually deeply adult. Euphoria unflinchingly portrays teen parties, mental health battles, drug abuse, social media pressures, and sexual encounters, all within a dreamlike visual style. The series wields an intensity that most teen dramas have trouble delivering, as its mature content and raw realism push emotional boundaries in ways that can be far too much for a child to witness.

2 'Game of Thrones' (2011–2019)

Game of Thrones is one of the finest works of the fantasy genre ever created, and the show should definitely be played far away from any lingering children. The incredible high fantasy series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novels and is set on the feudal continents of Westeros and Essos, centering on the warring noble houses vying desperately for power and the Iron Throne.

From taboo topics and brutal violence to downright nudity and explicit language, Game of Thrones is one of the most intriguing fantasy series—strictly for adults. It's packed with content that goes way beyond PG-13 entertainment, showcasing main character beheadings, massacres, and even extreme torture. Game of Thrones’ intensity comes mainly from its countless mature themes of power struggles and acts of betrayal, intense battles, and incredibly graphic content that would definitely be too much for any young viewer to process.

1 'It: Welcome to Derry' (2025)

It: Welcome to Derry is the very terrifying expansion to the world of Stephan King’s IT franchise and stands as a series that takes children’s fears and turns them into something far more disturbing. The captivating prequel series is set in the early 1960s, following several residents of the cursed town of Derry, where an ancient shape-shifting evil—often taking the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown—begins to terrorize the community after a 27-year reprieve.

It: Welcome to Derry may be a pretty recent series, but like its cinematic predecessors, it has done extremely well with audiences. The series is honestly addictive despite how intensely terrifying it is. It: Welcome to Derry may host several child characters at its center, but unlike most movies and shows, it doesn’t shy away from doing some pretty gruesome damage to them. The series is rather chilling and definitely not something for family entertainment, as it can be quite nightmare-inducing for both children and adults alike.
