Marsali and Frank in Outlander

Outlander is approaching its final season, so there is only so much time left for some of our favorite characters to return. While Jamie and Claire have consistently stood as the central protagonists of the Starz series, they have come to know dozens of additional characters over the years. Some of these have been friends and family, while others were instead mortal enemies. Still, each impacted Outlander's overarching story to the point that their absence has been a bit disappointing.

Many characters that have stopped appearing in the Outlander TV show are still present in the books. Their absences may come down to the availability of their actors, or perhaps the writers for Outlander have simply deemed them unnecessary to this version of the story. Regardless of the reason, it would be a shame for the romantasy series to come to an end without these characters getting at least one more appearance. Some may be harder to bring back than others, but Outlander season 8 could still feasibly give these beloved or intriguing characters another day in the sun.

10 Tom Christie

Tom Christie Could Return To Fraser's Ridge

Tom Christie has inspired a range of emotions in Outlander audiences since his first appearance. He was, at times, antagonistic, but the last old Tom was seen on screen in season 7, he had finally begun to win everyone over. It's ultimately revealed that he is in love with Claire, and though the feeling isn't quite mutual, an odd sort of friendship has developed between the pair.

The last we saw of Tom Christie, it was revealed that he had managed to escape execution after falsely confessing to his daughter Malva's murder. This was great news, but the man has been absent ever since. Jamie and Claire will return to Fraser's Ridge in Outlander season 8, which means they could be again reunited with Tom. However, this place does carry some unhappy memories for the man, so he may choose to settle elsewhere and, therefore, not return for the final season of Outlander.

9 Jenny Murray

Jenny Was Supposed To Come To America

Jenny is another character who made a return appearance in Outlander season 7. Jamie and Claire reunited with her at Lallybroch, and Roger even met a younger Jenny during his adventures in 1739. However, the Outlander TV series has significantly reduced Jenny's involvement in the events of this season. In the books, Jenny returned to the American Colonies with Jamie and was presumed dead along with her brother.

Kristin Atherton replaced Laura Donnelly as Jenny in Outlander season 7.

Of course, just as Jamie turned up alive in Philadelphia, Jenny did too. Unfortunately, Outlander season 7 instead left Jenny back in Scotland. Still, she told her brother she might join him at Fraser's Ridge eventually. It would be great to see this come to be in Outlander season 8. The sisterhood that formed between Jenny and Claire has always been a highlight of the series, and it would be interesting to see what this looks like as these two women finally settle down for their happily-ever-afters.

8 Master Raymond

Master Raymond Is The Key To Time Travel

Claire met Master Raymond in Outlander season 2 when she and Jamie lived in France for a time. This healer was a deeply intriguing character who developed a close bond with Claire. The last she saw of him, he was escaping death at the hands of the King while condemning his enemy, Comte St. Germain. It was a rather dramatic finish for his character, but there is so much more to Master Raymond than Outlander ever revealed.

The Outlander books reveal that Master Raymond is a time traveler—perhaps the most significant one that Claire has ever met. He is believed to have originated from around 500 B.C., and it's heavily suggested that he is an ancestor of both Claire and Geillis Duncan (and, perhaps, every other time traveler as well). Claire never learned the truth of this in Outlander, so it would be exciting to see this character return in season 8 to finally lay to rest the series' most lingering time-travel questions.

7 Comte St. Germain

Comte St. Germain Survived His Run-In With Raymond

Comte St. Germain is another character Claire met in France, though their relationship was far less friendly. It was because of Claire that Germain's ship was burned, and he carried a grudge against her from that point forward. He tried to have Claire killed, but the whole thing backfired. The last Germain appeared in Outlander, he was being poisoned to death by Master Raymond.

Like Master Raymond, this character is another Outlander time traveler.

What the Outlander TV series never revealed is that Germain survived. Moreover, like Master Raymond, this character is another Outlander time traveler. Germain makes a return in the spinoff novel, The Space Between, though he never reunites with his old enemy, Claire. Still, it would be interesting for Outlander season 8 to bring this character back, especially since another big reveal of the book is that Germain is Fergus' biological father.

6 Geillis Duncan

Geillis Could Be Outlander's Final Villain

Geillis Duncan made a return appearance in Outlander season 7, part 2 when Roger unexpectedly met her in the year 1739. This adventure reveals that it was because of Roger and Buck that Geillis and Dougall MacKenzie met in the first place—another intriguing paradox of time travel. As fun as this plotline was, it's a bit disappointing that Geillis didn't play a more prominent role.

As a time traveler, Geillis has unlimited potential in the Outlander series. Claire killed the woman to stop her from traveling through time to murder Brianna, but Outlander season 7 has already proven that death isn't the end for Geillis. Since she still exists in parts of the past, nothing is stopping her from traveling through time again and becoming a nuisance. Outlander season 8 could bring Geillis back again to bring some much-needed resolution to the Fraser Prophecy, a plotline that has essentially been forgotten since this character's death.

5 Frank Randall

Tobias Menzies Could Make One More Appearance

Actor Tobias Menzies played both Frank and Jonathan Randall in Outlander, but he hasn't appeared in the series for several seasons since both these characters died. As a prominent feature of the show's earlier episodes, it would be a shame for Outlander to end without Menzies returning. Of course, as a time travel series, it's perfectly possible that either Frank or Black Jack could be brought back to the screen, even following their deaths.

Brianna still deeply loves her adoptive father, and it would be interesting to see her have one last moment of connection with the man in Outlander. This could happen if Bree takes an unexpected turn during her time travel adventures. Or, she could reunite with Frank's spirit during some sort of near-death experience or a powerful dream. Whatever way Outlander's screenwriters could get Menzies' character back on the screen, it would be a heartwarming way to finish out the series.

4 Mary Hawkins Randall

Outlander Could Introduce More Of Frank's Ancestors

Mary Hawkins is another friend that Claire made in France, and, once again, she wound up being far more critical than anyone would have initially expected. Claire eventually deduced that Mary is Frank's direct ancestor, destined to marry Black Jack Randall and have a child with him. However, in one of Outlander's many twists, it's revealed that Mary's child was sired by Jack Randall's brother, Alexander.

Outlander: 13 Hidden Details About Frank Randall Everyone Missed

Although Frank isn't considered a fan-favorite character, there are a few interesting details about his arc that may intrigue you.

Mary hasn't been seen in Outlander for quite some time. The last Claire knew she had been widowed when Black Jack died at the Battle of Culloden. Mary likely remarried, and all these decades later, she is sure to be a grandmother by now. It would be fun for Claire to be reunited with her old friend in Outlander season 8, especially since this would likely mean meeting more of Frank's ancestors. Even if not Claire, it would be meaningful for Brianna to have a chance to meet the woman who made her adoptive father's life possible.

3 Jocasta MacKenzie Cameron

Outlander Can Wrap Up Jocasta's Story

Jamie's Aunt Jocasta was always a fun character in Outlander. She is a tough old bird who gives everyone a hard time at one point or another. Still, Jocasta is quite lovable. She has a unique connection to Brianna, and even Fergus becomes one of the woman's benefactors. Still, Jocasta hasn't been seen in Outlander for quite some time. She's an old woman at this point in the story, and travel has undoubtedly gotten even more complicated.

It would be nice to see Jocasta come to Fraser's Ridge for another visit in Outlander season 8, especially since it is technically her (stolen) gold that has caused so much of a fuss in season 7. Roger could again have some choice words with Jocasta, but if this doesn't happen, some alternative would be appreciated to put this character's story to rest. The old woman could at least be seen receiving a letter from Brianna or Jamie, with a glimpse at what the final years of her life in Outlander would look like.

2 Fergus Fraser

Claire & Jamie Haven't Seen Fergus In A While

Fergus Fraser is the adoptive son of Jamie and Claire, whom they picked up during their time in France in Outlander season 2. In season 7, Fergus is all grown up, married with a handful of children, and running a printing press in the American Colonies. However, he hasn't been seen in Outlander for quite some time. This is disappointing since Fergus is a constant presence throughout the Outlander books.

It would be disappointing for Outlander to end without a full family reunion.

It's likely that actor César Domboy has been unavailable to appear in Outlander season 7, explaining why Fergus's character was written out of the series. In the Outlander books, it's for Fergus' sick child that Claire returns to the Colonies from Scotland (not for Henry Grey), but this was changed in the show. Still, there's a chance that Fergus and his family could still appear in season 8. It would be disappointing for Outlander to end without a full family reunion.

1 Marsali MacKimmie Fraser

Outlander Can't End Without Marsali

Marsali is the daughter of Laoghaire and stepdaughter of Jamie and Claire. Though she initially hated Claire as much as her mother did, Marsali ultimately softened to her stepmother, and they became pretty close during their adventures together. As this happened, Marsali became an unlikely fan favorite in Outlander. She is sweet but snarky, and her chemistry with characters like Brianna allowed Marsali to solidify her place within the series. Unfortunately, like Fergus, she has been frustratingly absent from recent seasons.

Marsali and Fergus are married, so it's tricky to have one in Outlander without the other. Like her husband, Marsali is a constant presence in the Outlander books, but her involvement has been written out of the TV series. Still, with Brianna coming back to the past in Outlander season 8, it would be great to see these stepsisters reunited. Hopefully, the fantasy series' final installment can include a big moment in which everyone comes back together one last time.

Outlander Season 7 Poster

Outlander follows Claire Randall, a married nurse from 1945, who is transported back to 1743 Scotland. Amidst political intrigue and danger, she navigates life in the past and becomes torn between loyalty to her husband and the love for a dashing young warrior.
