The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 makes some big changes to Michael Connelly’s The Law of Innocence, most of which strengthen the onscreen adaptation. Michael Connelly’s books have been adapted for the small screen many times, and The Lincoln Lawyer has been one of the most faithful TV shows.
When The Lincoln Lawyer makes changes to the source material, it usually benefits the story or accounts for the differing needs of books and TV. Co-showrunners Dailyn Rodriguez and Ted Humphrey have a strong grasp on when to stay true to the book and when to make changes. The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 is perfect proof of this.
The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 is a nearly perfect season, maintaining the emotional journey of Mickey’s trial while also expanding the roles of supporting characters. Here are the ten biggest changes to the book and how they impact the overall narrative.
10 Maggie Joins Mickey’s Defense Team Much Earlier In The Show
Image via NetflixIn The Law of Innocence, Maggie only joins Maggie’s defense right before the case starts. She isn’t involved in almost any of the pre-trial hearings and only provides moral support before that. Maggie only steps in after Mickey’s co-counsel has to leave the trial because of her father’s death.
However, Maggie joins the defense extremely early in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4. Rather than taking over because of a death, she steps in when Lorna feels like she’s drowning while trying to keep the business afloat, handle other cases, and serve as co-counsel.
By putting Maggie on the defense’s side earlier, she has more exposure to Mickey’s job and to the important role in the justice system. Additionally, it gives Mickey and Maggie more time together as partners, even if it isn’t in a romantic capacity.
9 The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Kills Off Legal Siegel
Image via NetflixIn Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer books, David “Legal” Siegel dies between The Law of Innocence and Resurrection Walk. The source material for the fourth season ends with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the next book reveals that he died in 2022, about one week after Mickey visited him for the last time. It’s heavily implied that he died of dementia.
However, The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 moves this event up in the timeline, and he dies of a heart attack instead of dementia. Legal’s sooner death is both devastating and narratively significant. Mickey has spent the whole season struggling to feel supported and in control. The isolation and restriction really get to him.
Legal’s death is a marker of just how much Mickey has lost because of the murder case. Not only does his, for all intents and purposes, father die, but he can’t even go to the funeral.
8 Hayley Spends More TIme With Mickey In The Show
Courtesy of NetflixHayley and Mickey’s relationship in The Law of Innocence is heartwarming, and I knew that they needed to focus on their relationship more in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4. Luckily, they did exactly that, allowing them more time together than in the book.
In the book, Mickey and Hayley have regular lunches, and she occasionally goes to Mickey’s trials. However, this isn’t always the case, as she is in law school and living on her own. Mickey also doesn’t want people visiting him in jail.
The TV show has Hayley visit Mickey in jail. She often ditches school for the trial. She and Mickey bond over her taking law classes in addition to high school. Then, she goes to stay with Mickey at his home. Ultimately, the added Mickey and Hayley scenes show exactly what Mickey is fighting for. He isn't just fighting for his reputation. He’s fighting to protect Hayley.
7 Mickey Does House Arrest In The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4
In The Law of Innocence, Mickey is behind bars at the start, and later on, with a break in between. Like in The Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey has to “split the baby,” going back behind bars but maintaining his right to a speedy trial. However, what happens after he is sent back to prison is different.
The book has him get attacked and almost killed on the bus. As such, he remains in custody but receives a private escort from the prison to the jailhouse. In the show, he’s beaten in a prison AA meeting, proving he isn’t safe behind bars. Solitary confinement would violate his rights, so the judge allows him to go on house arrest.
There are two possible reasons for this change. First, Mickey being behind bars for half the season might get monotonous for some viewers. Secondly, house arrest gives Mickey and Maggie more one-on-one time together.
6 The Lincoln Lawyer Removes Harry Bosch
After four seasons, it feels redundant to point out that Harry Bosch isn’t present in The Lincoln Lawyer. He’s Mickey’s half-brother and a regular presence in The Lincoln Lawyer books. He was particularly important in The Law of Innocence, helping with Mickey’s murder trial.
Unfortunately, there is simply no way to include him, considering Prime Video owns the rights to the character and he is actively involved in Ballard and the upcoming Bosch prequel. It’s pretty much impossible that Prime Video would make a deal with a direct competitor, Netflix, to grant them access to one of their biggest assets.
This feels especially true since Netflix holds more power than ever with the HBO merger. Luckily, they found a way around the Bosch problem again in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4.
5 Hayley Records The FBI Altercation In The Lincoln Lawyer
Courtesy of NetflixIn both The Lincoln Lawyer TV show and The Law of Innocence, Mickey gets affronted by FBI agents late at night outside his house. In the book, Mickey records the entire interaction on his Ring Camera doorbell. This is the evidence he needs to manipulate the FBI.
In the TV show, Hayley Halley is the one who records the FBI altercation. When she realized it was the FBI, she snuck around to the side of the house and used her cellphone camera to tape everything.
Functionally, the method of recording is semantics. Either way, Mickey has what he needs. However, on a deeper level, the change shows that Hayley already had the savvy, legally-driven mind that will make her a great lawyer.
4 Mickey & Maggie Don’t Get Together In The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4
Mickey and Maggie are the core relationship in The Lincoln Lawyer, and many fans (excluding me) hoped the couple would find their way back to each other in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4. This would have even tracked with the book, where Mickey and Maggie rekindle their romance.
However, they stay separated in the show. At the end of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, Maggie and Hayley drive back to San Francisco after Mickey’s case has ended. She’s still with Jack, though she doesn’t seem invested in it. Hayley even points out that Maggie didn't list “Jack” as one of the things she’s looking forward to returning to.
There are many good reasons why Maggie & Mickey shouldn’t be together in The Lincoln Lawyer. The most significant in this case, though, is that the couple had a sour breakup between The Law of Innocence and Resurrection Walk. They would have had to walk the relationship back immediately.
3 The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Removes COVID-19 & Trump
Michael Connelly is known for incorporating current events and politics that impact Los Angeles in his The Lincoln Lawyer books. The Law of Innocence features 2 major current events - the COVID-19 pandemic and Trump’s first term. These help ground the story in a specific time and setting.
However, The Lincoln Lawyer removes the COVID-19 pandemic and all references to Donald Trump. The former can be easily explained away by the fact that The Lincoln Lawyer is set in the present day instead of late 2019 and early 2020.
The latter is a bit perplexing, given that we are in the second Trump presidency and the book’s criticisms of Trump remain true today. However, they do at least replace one reference to a Trump sticker with a thin blue-line phone case.
2 Hayley Gets Bullied Because Of Mickey’s Case In The Show
Courtesy of NetflixOne of the best changes in The Lincoln Lawyer is that they expanded the story to show how Mickey’s murder trial is affecting the people in his life. In The Law of Innocence, the trial's impact is limited to the firm's finances and to Mickey’s stress, which affects his girlfriend, who doesn’t appear in the show.
However, The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 makes it abundantly clear that everyone is sacrificing and suffering because of Mickey’s trial. His mom is worried. Maggie risks her job to help Mickey. Lorna is on the verge of a breakdown as she attempts to save the law firm.
The saddest and most cruel fallout from the trial is that Hayley is getting bullied both online and in person for her dad’s murder trial. This reflects the painful reality that family members are often blamed when their parents are accused of a crime. It’s also a reminder that injustice affects everyone.
1 The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 Introduces Mickey’s Secret Sister
Image via NetflixThe cast of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 features Cobie Smulders, who is known for playing Robin in How I Met Your Mother and Maria Hill in the MCU. However, they kept details about the character under lock and key before the season’s release.
We now know that Cobie Smulders plays Alison in The Lincoln Lawyer, the secret sister of Mickey Haller. She is introduced in the final five minutes of the show, so not many details about her personality are known. However, she does have a good instinct for escaping danger, which could be helpful next season.
Technically, Mickey Haller does have three half-sisters and a half-brother, Bosch, in the books. However, they certainly aren’t introduced in The Law of Innocence, and they don’t appear either. As such, her appearance in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 is unexpected but exciting.
