Over the years, Netflix has put together a pretty impressive catalog of original content. While their TV shows like Stranger Things, Squid Game, Wednesday, The Crown, and Arcane are among their most famous projects, the original films can sometimes get overlooked in comparison. That's especially true when it comes to comedies, because far too many people don't mention the genre when discussing the best of the best on Netflix.
Their minds tend to go to the Oscar-nominated projects that received widespread critical acclaim, like The Power of the Dog, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Marriage Story, and Tick...Tick...Boom! While it's fair to say those are some of the best Netflix original movies, it's important to appreciate the platform's comedic offerings. They cover legacy sequels, book adaptations, fantastic romantic comedies, animated films, and originals that blend genres well.
Many of them also feature some of the best casts around, including legends like Eddie Murphy and Daniel Craig, as well as rising stars like Zoey Deutch, Camila Mendes, and Lana Condor. One thing that the best Netflix original comedy movies have in common is that you're going to have a good time watching each of them and they're sure to make you laugh.
10 Beverly Hill Cop: Axel F (2024)
Most people never thought we'd get a fourth Beverly Hills Cop film since the most recent installment came out 30 years prior in 1994. However, Netflix set up a legacy sequel, which was risky because there are times when those, especially among comedies, disappoint.
Thankfully, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F was the fourth straight fun installment of the franchise. The story sees Axel return to Los Angeles to protect his daughter and uncover the truth about a conspiracy. Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt joined the returning Eddie Murphy to form a great cast in this well-received sequel.
9 Holidate (2020)
At first glance, Holidate could seem like another run-of-the-mill Christmas movie and there are a ton of those put out each year. However, Holidate is special because it actually covers a bunch of holidays, making it an ideal film to rewatch at almost any time of the year.
Holidate follows two perpetually single people, Sloane and Jackson, as they agree to be each other's dates to various events to avoid questions from their families. Of course, the two fall for each other along the way. There are laughs from start to finish and strong chemistry from the leads.
8 Someone Great (2019)
Someone Great is one of Netflix's best entries into the romantic comedy genre. That's because it doesn't follow the traditional tropes or story progress that many do, as it deals with the aftermath of a relationship rather than the beginning of one.
Gina Rodriguez stars as Jenny, a woman who gets dumped before leaving New York for a new job and has one final night out with her two best friends. Although romance plays a part, the key to this film is the sisterhood between the three main friends, which also brings us the biggest laughs.
7 Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget (2023)
Similar to Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is another legacy sequel that Netflix produced. The original Chicken Run was released back in 2000, so not many people expected a sequel more than two decades later.
The folks at Aardman Animations were up to the task of giving us a sequel to something so iconic. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a worthy follow-up, which sees Ginger and Rocky lead a rescue mission to save their daughter from a poultry farm. Reviews were very positive and the film landed a BAFTA nomination.
6 Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Another great romantic comedy from Netflix is Always Be My Maybe, which uses the friends-to-lovers trope that the genre is famous for. The plot centers on childhood friends Sasha and Marcus, who reconnect as adults for the first time since they attempted a failed fling as teenagers.
Their lives are at completely different points, yet their bond brings them together. Always Be My Maybe works so well because Ali Wong and Randall Park are fantastic as the lead characters, while Keanu Reeves pops up for an unexpected, yet hilarious cameo.
5 Do Revenge (2022)
Do Revenge didn't get nearly enough appreciation for what it does. Taking inspiration from Strangers on a Train, the movie is set in a modern high school and follows a former queen bee who strikes up a partnership with a new girl in school to enact revenge on their respective enemies.
The film features some wild twists, while Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke work well together as the main characters. There are some great laughs too, with the highlight being Sophie Turner's short but memorable turn as a rich girl who gets to deliver some fantastic lines.
4 To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)
It's not often that a Netflix original movie is popular enough to get an entire trilogy, yet To All the Boys I've Loved Before isn't your everyday rom-com. Based on a novel series of the same name, the film uses a fun premise to deliver one of the best modern romantic comedies.
Lara Jean has private letters she wrote to her crushes in the past delivered to those boys, throwing her life into chaos. She starts up a fake relationship with one of them, Peter, in a mutually beneficial deal, only to fall for each other. It's a tried and true formula that stands out because of how well-made this one is.
3 Set It Up (2018)
Speaking of strong rom-coms on Netflix, Set It Up ranks near the top. For starters, the film stands out because it features two actors who have broken out since its release. Zoey Deutch has proven herself as a star, especially in this genre, while Glen Powell is Hollywood's "It" guy these days.
Set It Up sees them play two overworked assistants who conspire to get their demanding bosses to date one another. Along the way, the two fall for each other and what makes Set It Up so good is the chemistry between Deutch and Powell.
2 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Knives Out was a hit in 2019, so Netflix shelled out a lot of money to get the two sequels to come straight to their streaming service, rather than theaters. While the first installment is still the best in the eyes of many, both sequels have delivered.
Wake Up Dead Man is probably the better mystery but Glass Onion is easily the funniest of the trilogy. Daniel Craig is tremendous as Benoit Blanc again, but it's Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista who help make sure this is hilarious. It's such a good satire on the wealthy.
1 Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
The list started with Eddie Murphy and that's who it ends with. In the '80s and '90s, not many comedians could match Murphy in terms of popularity and performance. The '00s and '10s saw Murphy star in some lackluster movies and fall out of the public eye.
He returned with a vengeance in Dolemite is My Name, which sees him play Rudy May Moore, who famously played blaxploitation legend Dolemite. Murphy scored a Golden Globe nomination for his captivating performance in this great comedy that's one of Netflix's best films ever.
