While there is a lot of standard horror movie fare to enjoy this Halloween season, there are also some spooky movies that take bold and inventive approaches to the genre. Such is the case with the indie horror gem I Saw the TV Glow, which plays on societal conventions like consuming nostalgia as well as over-reliance on media. The movie follows two teens, Owen and Maddy, who bond over their favorite television show. However, after the show's cancelation, the friends begin to have trouble distinguishing between the show and reality.
Written and directed by filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun it is a surreal and vivid psychological horror movie that is sure to divide audiences. 9 Late Night With The Devil (2024)
Arrives On Hulu On October 19
Late Night with the Devil is a horror thriller starring David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy. Delroy is a late-night talk show host in 1977 trying to keep his broadcast on the air. But when he tries to communicate with the devil through a young girl live on the air, things don't go according to plan.
Director Cameron Cairnes , Colin Cairnes
Release Date March 22, 2024
Cast David Dastmalchian , Laura Gordon , Ian Bliss , Fayssal Bazzi , Ingrid Torelli , Rhys Auteri , Josh Quong Tart , Georgina Haig
Runtime 86 Minutes
Another horror movie from this year that took some interesting and unique risks with its storytelling is Late Night with the Devil. The movie takes place on the set of a struggling late-night show in which the ambitious host, Jack Delroy, attempts to boost the ratings with an episode dedicated to the discussion of the devil and demonic possession. However, the skepticism surrounding the discussion takes a turn with one guest who is all too convincing.
While the black-and-white Late Night with the Devil scenes break up the talk show moments, it is that recreation of the 1970s late-night shows that makes the movie show interesting. There are not as many big set pieces as other horror movies, but the filmmakers understand how to use the odd format to create some truly memorable and unsettling moments.
8 Trap (2024)
Available On Max On October 25
Trap is a film by writer-director M. Night Shyamalan under his Blinding Edge Pictures label. The film is part of a deal struck with Warner Bros for him to direct and produce several films under their banner.
Release Date August 2, 2024
Following his acclaimed role as part of the cast of Oppenheimer, Josh Hartnett continues his comeback in Hollywood with a starring role in the latest M. Night Shyamalan movie. Hartnett stars in Trap as Cooper, a seemingly mild-mannered family man who takes his young daughter to the concert of her favorite pop star. However, Cooper soon comes to realize that the entire concert is an elaborate trap to catch a serial killer. This poses issues for Cooper as he is the killer they are after.
The movie takes a bold swing in putting a ruthless killer as the protagonist while also making the audience sort of root for him to get away. This tricky approach is sold through Hartnett's terrific performance, as he brings humor and fun to the role while also being extremely frightening when the moment calls for it.
7 Brothers (2024) - Prime Video
Available On Prime Video On October 18
Brothers (2024) is a film centered around the complex dynamic between two siblings navigating personal and familial challenges. Directed by nan, the movie explores themes of brotherhood, loyalty, and redemption as the characters confront their past and seek reconciliation.
Director Max Barbakow
Release Date October 17, 2024
In terms of wacky comedies, Brothers is one of the best offerings on streaming now. Acclaimed actors Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin make for an unlikely yet surprisingly effective comedic duo as adult twin brothers with a long history of breaking the law. While Brolin has attempted to go straight and start a family, those plays are hindered when Dinklage is released from prison with another risky score in mind.
It is a lot of fun seeing these well-respected actors embracing their silliest sides with the broad and ridiculous humor of the story. Indeed, the chemistry between Brolin and Dinklage is what elevates the movie as they perfectly play the brothers who have never matured past constantly bickering with each other. The Brothers cast also features some fun roles from Glenn Close as their even more devious mother and Brendan Fraser as the unhinged villain.
6 MaXXXine (2024)
Available On Max On October 18
In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx lands her big break, but her rise to stardom is jeopardized by a mysterious killer targeting starlets. As the body count rises, secrets from Maxine's past threaten to surface, intertwining her quest for fame with a deadly game of survival.
Director Ti West
Release Date July 5, 2024
Runtime 103 Minutes
Following the clever and inventive slasher movie X and its even more daring and acclaimed prequel Pearl, Ti West completes his bloody and wild horror trilogy with MaXXXine. The movie picks up with the titular character and sole survivor of X, Maxine (Mia Goth), as she is pursuing her dream of becoming a star. While working in the adult film world, Maxine gets the opportunity to star in a real horror movie, but that dream and her life are endangered by a mysterious stalker killing those around her.
MaXXXine is not as complex and interesting as Pearl but features the same satisfying throwback horror vibes as X. West is clearly drawing from giallo horror movies and the work of Brian De Palma with this seedy, bloody, and deranged look at Hollywood of the 1980s. Goth continues to shine in the trilogy and she is joined by an outstanding supporting cast, including Kevin Bacon, Giancarlo Esposito, and Elizabeth Debicki.
5 Woman Of The Hour (2024)
Available On Netflix On October 18
Woman of the Hour is a biographical thriller directed by Anna Kendrick, who also stars in the film. The movie chronicles the infamous real-life story of Cheryl Bradshaw's appearance on the 1978 edition of The Dating Game, where one of the contestants, Rodney Alcala, would later be revealed as a notorious serial killer. The film delves into the chilling intersection of entertainment and true crime.
Director Anna Kendrick
Release Date September 26, 2023
Runtime 94 Minutes
Anna Kendrick makes her directorial debut in Woman of the Hour, which is based on a strange true story. Though Kendrick is known for her light and fun movies like Pitch Perfect, Woman of the Hour is a gripping thriller that is loosely based on the story of a woman who went on a dating game show only to later learn that the mystery bachelor she chose turned out to be a serial killer. The movie expands on that idea with this fictionalized take on what that date might have looked like.
The fun premise makes for a surprisingly chilling movie as Woman of the Hour feels like it could be a charming romantic movie at first only for the tension to keep rising. Kendrick's directorial skills are impressive and confident while her performance is one of her best, in a role unlike ones she has played before. It is a totally unique and extremely effective thriller that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
